I would expect nothing less than a solid finals style celebration from the IF boys tonight. In a season where wins have been far a few between, well done to the IF ressies for notching their first win for the season!! Hope you enjoy it boys.

Wouldubelieve I thought WOS pressure around the contest was very good. Plympton pushed alot of numbers behind the ball earlier than i thought they would.

You'd pretty much think the final 5 is set now, although the next couple of games will be very important in seeing who plays who and who gets that double chance. So is it too early to start talking finals???

Whilst Pultney seem set to take out the minor round, they haven't taken part in a finals series since I don't know when (the results on iscore only go back to 2004). Rosewater are in a similar boat in that they haven't played in September since 2006. Will this lack of finals experience work against these sides when the intensity is turned, or will it make them that much hungrier to make the most of their opportunities?

BOS can claim the most finals experience and success in recent years. They've won 5 out of 6 of their finals since working their way up from Div 7 in 2006, only exiting last years final series by 1 point against Smithfield. Past results would suggest their confidence grows the deeper they get into finals. Definately a team to be wary of.

WOS are the club to have tasted premiership success most recently and there would still be a lot of boys running around in their side that remember what it takes to win in September. Results from last year would suggest they know how to grind out a win, with both the Preliminary and Grand Final being won by small margins.

Plympton have tasted the most disappointment in recent years, with a 50% finals winning percentage in the last two years and loosing Preliminary finals in both 2007 and 2008. Will the lessons they learnt from these losses give them an edge or could those demons come back to haunt them and lead them to question themselves when everything is on the line??

Looking forward to the major round kicking off in a couple of weeks.

wouldnt think the finals is quite set yet possum. have a look at the draw and you will see what i mean, if plympton beat blacks this week and hope valley beat ingle farm they will play each other in round 18 with the winner finishing fifth. it may not happen but still a realistic chance

Good point, my apologies. Would be a cracker of a game if next week plays out that way, especially considering there was only 2 points in it between the two of you last time. You boys started to get a few back from injuries?? I'd lost a little faith and started tipping against you, but you've managed to pull out the goods in recent weeks and stuff my tips up. Not a bad time of year to string a few wins together, especially close hard fought ones.

Certainly a danger game for WOS. You would think they should win it, but with wins over Rosewater and Pultney, you can't write Smithfield off.

Re: SAAFL Div 5 & 5R (2009)

Postby valleys07 » Sun Aug 02, 2009 10:42 pm

With the exception of bos as i played in the magoos when we played them, here is my observations of the top 5 teams:

Pulteney- Very evenly balanced side with a good mix of talls and smalls. The only "weakness" that i feel we exploited but couldnt sustain was matching their toughness around the footy at stoppages and creating run similar to them running out of defence. They dont rely on perrie as much as people think and will be almost certain to be in div4 in 2010.

Plympton- My mid season shoe in for the flag after our round 10 meeting has been brought back to the pack. A great side full of class players, but are suspect when pressured into 1 on 1 footy. Play big grounds to perfection as they have a lot of great runners that know how to find space, but when corralled on small ovals ala hv and wos, i feel find the going tough. Very much capable of winning the flag, but with 2 prelim losses hanging over their heads and a few sides exploiting their weaknesses.....what is in store?

Rosewater- The yoyo team of division 5. At their best they can beat anyone in this division, a great mix of hard bodies, hard runners and blokes that know how to find the footy and use it beautifully. Anderson, Uerding, Birch and itzkovich were standouts against us with motlop showing glimpses of match turning class. But their worst, do these players go missingor is their game plan exploitable? it seems to me that there is a bigger gap than that of other sides with their best and worst, with games that we thought would be marked down as wins, turned out to be losses, such as smithies and against us. Certainly capable of promotion, but also capable of a straight sets exit.

wos- For us, the hardest of the top 5 sides to match up on. A fit side with a rock solid defence, midfield that works hard both forward and back and a good mix of talls and smalls up forward. midfield reads o'hara very well and ferris up forward provides a great target. Barber has a number of midfield options that he rotates either of the bench or resting forward and back, and does it very well. In my opinon if they bring their A game in the finals, will be in div 4 next year, they know after last year what it takes, and retaining their core group from last years flag, wouldnt suprise me one bit to see back to back.

As for us, well our fate rests with plympton next weekend. if it gets through to round 18 against blacks, it promises to be a belter, with previous 3 games being decided by about 2 goals in total. This finals series promises to be a cracker, just hope we are a part of it!
