well it was a bit of a comedy of errors. player red carded in thrid quarter prob half way through quarter. fairly chaotic on our bench due to a number of factors. as a result one of our bench players went back on to the ground about 5-6 minutes after the red card. was picked up by someone and resulted in a player count right on the three quarter time siren. 18 players on he ground for us, bit more confusion, umps unsure what to do. end result our score wiped. scores were bos 6.6 to if 3.12. we kick into the wind in the last quarter they kick 3.2 to our 2.1. we were forced to play with 17 in the last quarter as it was claimed incorrectly that we could not replace the red carded player at all. also as it turns out the player count and score reduction was incorrect also as that rule changed a couple of years ago. rule 33 in the handbook from memory.

lucky this game wasn't impacting finals aspirations.

as for depth, we did have a few probs on saturday but should have that rectified with some tissues and codral in the coming week

Interesting read in todays saafl footy news by the president in relation to this subject and turns out that correct decision was made on the day in relation to score being wiped as umpire has power to apply all or nothing of the rule.

33 COUNTING OF PLAYERS
33.1 The captain or acting captain of a team may at any time during a match request that the field umpire count the number of players of the opposing team who are on the playing surface.
33.2 Where such a request is made the field umpire shall stop play at the first available opportunity and call into line, within the centre square, the players of both teams who are at the time on the playing surface and count the number of players.
33.3 Where the team has more than the permitted number of players on the playing field the following shall apply:
(a) field umpire shall instruct both goal umpires to record the scores of both teams at the time of the player count.
(b) A field umpire shall award a free kick to the captain or acting captain of the opposing team which shall be taken at the centre circle or where play was stopped, whichever is the greater penalty against the offending team:
(c) A fifty metre penalty shall then be imposed from the position where the free kick was awarded; and
(d) Upon completing the count the field umpire(s) should ensure that each team has the permitted number of players on the field prior to recommencing the match
(e) The field umpire as soon as practical after the match, report to The League that a request has been made to count the number of players in a team and the number of players actually counted.
(f) The League shall determine whether the offending team shall lose all points which it had scored in the match up to the time of the count, and if so determined The League shall have power to vary the scores of the match and/or provide such other penalty as deemed appropriate by The League.

So, as I read it, the President is wrong.

The score can only be wiped by the League and not the umpires on the day.....

correct sd. we knew on the sunday that the wrong rule (the old rule) had been applied but figured since the game made no difference to us making the finals that we'd let it be. we also had a report to deal with in relation to the game to focus on at the time. then got contacted by the league that they were looking into the player count according to rules and regs. received confirmation yesterday that the scores as they would have been stand and therefore we have been awarded the game.

we had a count in our game with rosewater...confusion reigned..umpires apologised to us after the game for making errors..

basically..rosies had a guy yellowed then double yellowed then red carded and banned from the game for the day..we understood that to mean he couldnt be replaced so when another rosewater player went onto the ground we called a count..unbeknowns to us the umpire had told rosewater that he could be replaced but didnt tell us..the count therefore was 18/18 and rosies got a free kick 50m out..got a goal and broke our momentum..i always thought red card was gone for the day and couldnt be replaced..always something new to learn eh? :)

Up to the Umps disgression as to the amount of time that the player cannot be replaced for, i believe that there MUST be some period of time (but i may be wrong), but the umps can decide eg 15m, end of qtr, 3/4 time etc, interchange steward and bench to be advised...

But there is no set time limit on it.

Incorrect -
Yellow Card - off for ten minutes - with replacement (if available)
Second Yellow Card - same conditions of Red Card + automatic one week suspension
Red Card - Off for game - no replacement for rest of game
