basically..rosies had a guy yellowed then double yellowed then red carded and banned from the game for the day..we understood that to mean he couldnt be replaced so when another rosewater player went onto the ground we called a count..unbeknowns to us the umpire had told rosewater that he could be replaced but didnt tell us..the count therefore was 18/18 and rosies got a free kick 50m out..got a goal and broke our momentum..i always thought red card was gone for the day and couldnt be replaced..always something new to learn eh? :)

Red card surely means cant be replaced?

Up to the Umps disgression as to the amount of time that the player cannot be replaced for, i believe that there MUST be some period of time (but i may be wrong), but the umps can decide eg 15m, end of qtr, 3/4 time etc, interchange steward and bench to be advised...

But there is no set time limit on it.

Incorrect -
Yellow Card - off for ten minutes - with replacement (if available)
Second Yellow Card - same conditions of Red Card + automatic one week suspension
Red Card - Off for game - no replacement for rest of game

I may well be wrong, but im pretty sure im not on this one, as it was re-affirmed this year through barry oates when i went in for some "umpring 101" but just because a red card is issued that does not automatically mean that the team plays with 17 men, unless this is in fact for a second yellow card being issued, then the rules may be different, this may be why im confused.

But for a straight red card there is no rule that states that the team shall play with 17 men for the duration of the match, but as a directive we were advised that in most cases the player that recieves a red card should be sent off for the entirity of the match, for cases where the infirnging player may sit on the bench for half an hour or so and stew on it, then come back on like rambo and gun down all in sight.

But even then the infringing player may be send off for the game but he may be replaced after a period of time.

I have always been a tad mistified by the rule of a player being sent of with a yellow card and able to replace him. I beleive that the rule should be that you can not replace them. I know this rule may be abused by the occasional B grade umpire but it would be the ultimate punishment for a team to play with 17. Imo it would encourage better behavior on the footy field. Theres pro's and con's for the argument but that's the way I have always viewed it.

I don't mind a yellow carded player being replaced but surely by the time they progress to a red card it should also mean NO replacement.

My understanding of the red card was that the player is off for the rest of the game and cannot be replaced for 10 minutes
After that 10 minutes he can be replaced

No, your understanding is actually wrong, although more often than not that is the way the umps do it, but it is entirely up to the umps to decide the course of action.

But yellow card is a set 10m

And i'm with whoever said it, a yellow card should be 10m with 17 men, that would really penalise and you'd see less red cards if the yellow was more severe.

I think its grey because there is actually no set-in-stone red card procedure, as i said it is pretty much up to the umps to decide on the severity of it, and penalise accordingly.

My understanding also is that it is up to the ump, but even they are not sure. Last issue we had even asked ump can we replace (had red card) and his smart arse answer was check the rule book.

He spoke to me after the half time break and explained that two yellow cards should have been a non-replacement of player for 10mins. We replaced our player within that 10 mins (after checking with the umpire to see if we were allowed) so he said that the count of players was actually a correct call by you (ie: we had 1 too many on the ground) but due to the fact we had been instructed that we could replace (and at the time he believed the rules to be different) you were ruled to have called an incorrect count hence the free kick and 50m to us.

Now...theory and what ifs

Once a player is given a yellow card he is sent from the ground and is allowed to be replaced.
At what point is the player no longer on the ground? At the issue of a yellow or when the player leaves the field?
It only states that a player cannot be replaced for 10mins if they get a second yellow.
What if they are already off the ground (or deemed to be off the ground)?
Does a team then need to remove a player from the field?

was that the ingle farm v blacks game a few weeks ago? if so i did hear that and he was a bit dismissive of the guy doing the interchange when he asked.

There is an even greater issue in regards to this as well, the 10m is 10m or actual playing time, which means 10m + time on. This is something that i did not know until this season! i thought it was just 10m of game time (10m non stop except for quarter time breaks).

So you need the time keeper to advise you of when the player is allowed back on the ground, which i would think would be almost impossible if you were playign at Elizabeth where the time keeper is a fair way away from the interchange, same with plympton although not as far away..

Was this game and he certainly was dismissive of anyone that asked, had a real bee in his bonnet over having to officiate 2 games, but had no scruples about accepting payment after the game for what I thought was a very poor display of umpiring.

thanks maddog..thats given it a bit more clarity..it certainly wasnt us trying to get a cheap win..we believed he couldnt be replaced and he had been..and as the ump said to you guys..we were correct to ask for a count..but then he gave the free and 50m penalty against us..confusion reigned
