This is going to impress the players that would prefer to start late they have 3 runs prior to Christmas and then go flat out in the new year. There would be a fair chance that they look after themselves pretty well on their own though.

That was my point, clubs keep starting earlier and earlier but the team that keeps getting the job done come finals team hardly get cracking till after Christmas.

I think recruiting is one of the major reasons Pre Season is starting earlier and earlier each year....If you start mid to late January or even Feb for some teams it can be hard to get new players as they have already been snapped up somewhere else and training with their new team and mingling with all the players....early bird gets the worm as they say.

I personally don't think you gain too much fitness wise from starting so early before xmas & new year but I know one of the reasons we are starting this week is so potential recruits can mix with the playing group early on and familiarise themselves with the club before we break and comeback in Jan.

Spot on Riddler, i know we have a couple potential recruits that want to train with us before making a commitment.
If we were to start in Jan then we would more than likely have no chance of landing these guy's.

I don't mean to be rude but what in all honesty do you gain from starting pre season in November. You train twice a week till Xmas have 3 weeks off, gain 5 kgs, and then spend the months of Jan and Feb trying to burn it off. An ideal situation which a few clubs do is a couple of runs before Xmas - just to get the cobwebs out, meet any new players etc then start mid-jan and train twice a week.

Just out of curiousity, how does most clubs structure pre-season? We find it hard picking two nights that fit in with everyone - cricket/tennis etc. Does many clubs have morning sessions?

You're contradicting yourself.... the point of training in November IS to get the cobwebs out, meet new players and new coaches and maybe even....wait for it.... GET A LITTLE FITNESS.....

I gather you're not one of them, but some people like to get some k's and ball work under the belt in November and give themselves a bit of a base to take into the new year. Of course you have to actually do some of your own fitness work over that break to keep those kilos off (without having to be told to do it...) but I guess that boils down to whether you are a person who likes to stay fit all year or a person who just puts in a bit of an effort in January and February...
I love grapes. With grapes, you always get another chance. You know, if you have a crappy apple or a peach, you’re stuck with that crappy piece of fruit. If you have a crappy grape, no problem-just move on to the next. ‘Grapes: The Fruit of Hope.

Yeah why not....Never too early ;) Saves explaining to these guys later on why they are playing C's or D's when they think they should be playing higher...

Couldnt agree more, especially the young blokes who have spent the summer in the gym getting massive, but have done zero cardio. As opposed to us older blokes who have spent the summer on the couch getting massive and doing zero cardio! :)

The way i see it, if you start off at say, 90kg...don't do anything, gain 5kg over xmas, then you start at 95kg for preseason.

If you start at 90kg, train in Nov and Dec, maybe get down to 86kg-87kgs, then gain 5kg over xmas, you come back at 91kgs-92kg.....still better off in my opinion.

Not to mention the chance to get back into having a kick and catch with the boys and a pre xmas piss up! I'm all for preseason before xmas!
I'm proud of you fellas. You all kept your head on a swivel, and that's what you gotta do when you find yourself in a vicious cock fight!
