What would you like to see from umpires in Amateur League

Postby Demon68 » Sun May 18, 2008 11:31 pm

Given the negative comments in some posts recently in relation to umpiring performances this year, and the rebukes asking why some always criticise umpires but dont seem to want to put up their hand to do the job, perhaps it is a good time to ask those of use that are involved in this great game of ours, 'What would you like to see from umpires in amatuer league to develop umpires or lift their profile'?

Now whilst umpires should not be the focus in the game, remember they go out there week in week out to allow us to have a kick and a catch each week, and their job is thankless and a very lonely place for them, no where to hide our there and copping abuse (I can say that as I am on the end of yellow cards regularly).

Over to you all to suggest how we can make our game greater and more enjoyable for us all to play.

You'er right there, it's a thankless job (unless your searchin for votes after the final siren, a hand shake and a thanks cant hurt the chances boys). Having said that they have put their hands up to do a job, and are compensated financially for their time im sure (prob not worth the slander at times, noted). Its been say a thousand times but consistancy is the key, there's nothing more frustrating than an umpire making different decisions on similar occurances in the same game. And protect the bloke going for the ball, do those two little things for me and im a happy man.

1. Communication with the players on & off the field.
2. Don't over umpire. (some umpire over the top in look'n for free's that arn't there- WHISTLE HAPPY)
3. Let the game flow, its not netball.
4. CONSISTENCY in decision making.
5. Not hold grudges with clubs ( bias )
6. Read your umpires report during the week & take note of any criticisms or weaknesses delivered from opposition clubs, providing they are constructive & work on them instead of being so stubborn & up youselves some of them.

each club umpire should be made to attend 1 compulsory umpires meeting per year to learn and refresh their knowledge of the game. Also get basic training on how to handle volatile situations. Everyone all round would be much better off

trust me I have been on both sides of the fence and its mind boggling to what happens each week. Most whingers seem to back down when you offer them the whistle if they think they can do a better job. If you are on the playing side you vent your frustrations as politely as you can with out going overboard.

I would just like to see the umpires not get carried away with thinking they are of AFL standard and have to umpire accordingly. Most people on here play in a suburban league and a little bit of a fair go for all would be nice. Its nice when only the obvious frees are paid and the game is let to flow. I can tell you as a current player, we don't care if you pay a free kick for a certain infringment, its when you don't the next time that gets you offside with everybody. Also to all the umpire coaches out there loosen up and little and let them umpire, instead of sitting on the boundry with your note book and pens looking to pull apart all the things they do wrong.

Just my little RANT

For the record i mainly play forward and fell sorry for all the backmen with the stupid in the back rule. Cut it out at GRASS ROOTS LEVEL.

What would you like to see from umpires in Amateur League

When umpiring a game where a team is wearing a white "clash" jumper, DO NOT WEAR A WHITE shirt, even if you are on rotation from the SANFL!!

Mate, i honestly don't think the umpiring officials watch the games, thats why they are so bad.
It wouldn't surprise me if the officials ( B. Oates & Co ) don't even read the umpire reports that clubs hand in from the week end.
Wheres the accountability for their insipid display?

Haha, it does make it hard when you've got both umpires favouring the opposition

He was favouring you blokes early in our ANZAC day clash, but as soon as he paid one against your side they went ape-sh*t at him and he gave you bugger all after that. They could use him a lot better (not condoning bias here) if they just stopped giving him such a hard time...

...having said that, he did give away a 25m against me for saying, "nothing's changed" and then refused to give one against your players for saying, "that's f*cken bullsh*t pugsley" so he does tend to accept their abuse a lot more!!

He's reknowned for giving us SFA, even if they are blatant, in a display of over-compensating to not be biased. Must have been a bit more impartial on Anzac Day. I reckon he gives penalties for being a smart-arse rather than swearing too.

One thing: I thought "Holding the Ball" required "Prior Opportunity".
Some umpires seem to forget that part; remember prior opportunity, fellas.
Players can't just get the footy, then get rid of it... well, I do, but I'm not very good.
Are you gonna eat that?
