A rethink maybe on the cards

Postby Sponge Bob » Sat Jul 19, 2008 10:33 pm

Looking at the result of the VAFA versus SAAFL U/23 game might lead to some soul searching by the multitude of selectors that frequent games on a Saturday looking for talent.
Maybe if they went to the clubs on an individual basis and spoke with each club coach to get some ideas on who they should be watching, the job might become much easier for them.
Maybe Crossie is not "Blighty" after all!

saafl intellectually challenged team won by 1 point..first time they have beaten victoria ever and usually lose by 20 goals +..congrats to coach john schulz and his team

2 things to say..

are they looking far and wide to get these u/23 players or if your not div 1 you dont get a look in?..maybe they should look at the lower grades as well?

how many years has crossy been doing it?..lovely guy and good coach but it seems sometimes he has the job for life!

Sorry demon but this has been my point of view and that of many others since the inception of the U/23 concept. Recent record (last 2 games) as winners good but my idea of finding the best players in a club is to talk to the club coach. Not sure this is always the case. I also think the coaching position should not be a "fait accompli" for the same guy every year. A lot of people rate Crossie as a coach and my comment comparing him to Blighty was "tongue in cheek" because if you listen to some of the people who promote him, that's who they compare him with.

Go you mighty VICS. The saafl is a joke seven eights of the players in the comp would not get a kick in the under 16s.

I think that comment might be a bit off the mark. Maybe that's one of the reasons Victorians are classified as arrogant when it comes to the topic of footy

I can recall Luke woodcock when he was at West Croydon in Div6 playing in the u23 side. Then he got injured in one of the games.

There were 4 blokes from div 2 but the fact 2 of them were brought in this week (Wilson, Juniper) smacks of a lack of effort in talent identification. These blokes have been tearing it up all year but the state selectors apparently knew nothing of them.

Maybe Crossy needs to look at the blokes he has as selectors??

=D> great comments! we at st paul's have a couple lads under 23 one of which has kicked in excess of 70 odds goals already from a forward pocket and the other a club captain who deserve to at least get spoken to. no point nominating them as they would be rejected straight away for being in Div 7.

I remember when I was asked to train for the A3-A6 team (94/95). There were many many invites sent out, but only a few either bothered turning up, or went out on a regular basis.

One club in particular who had a raft of blokes who could've been a walk up start in that game simply did not appear. I understand their club did not want them to get injured playing in a rep game. In the years I played in Div 3 to Div 6, this club was never represented in the state side, which is just a shame.

I suppose all I'm saying is that it's not necessarily the selectors, nor coaches fault that we were beaten. There are many other factors involved.

Good call, Crossy & selectors way off mark, plenty of good talent being missed or overlooked in lower grades, because guys tend to want to play with their mates and are being penalised and not looked at because they are not playing in high grades

Why would they want to play this game then? None of their mates would be there.

Chance to represent their state, but they're not even asked, considered or scouted.
