Should SAAFL split into 2 comps - metropolitan and college

This is the way it was in 1996, P comp and A comp. To play in metropolitan competition, college sides would need to meet certain standards such as oval size, canteen, catering, spectator facilities, scoreboard. For example, Rostrevor OC would be OK, and Sacred Heart OC may not be.

I know this may raise a few eyebrows but I just want to get a feel whether metro clubs would prefer playing metro clubs and whether college clubs would prefer to play college clubs.

Please select your appropriate option, whether you are from a metro or college club.

I would say no as some of the cleanest and better games that you play are against college sides. When you play those teams all players are going for the ball and there is not bullshit behind the play.

Sorry but I think this is a poor idea.

The biggest problem with the SAAFL is grading in the bottom half of the comp. As Dunks7 has noted thier C grade got beat by 100 points on the weekend in D8R
and then have a look at some of the teams in div 9.

The problem is most clubs in div 1,3 and 3 might have only enough players for 3 teams so the highest thier c grade should be is div 9 agaisnt the c grades from teams in lower grades.

Having been there last year and playing in div 8 (then the div 1 c grade) it can be a very high standard with players trying to break into thier clubs div 1R team.

No offence to anyone playing a lower grade ( I have many of times) but most div 1R teams would fit into div 3 and having played a mixture of div 8 and div 1R last year teams like , Rostrevor OC, Broadview and Gaza c grades where not far off some of the lower div 1R teams. So good luck to any one who has to play them this year.

In saying that a number of other c grade from div 1 where not so good, Henley, Salisbury North, Woodville South, Gepps X.

So i dont know the answer but getting beaten (flogged) each week will not be fun, and for clubs struggling to put that last team on the park it will be hard.

Yeah I'm against it too, the college sides are just like any other club in the competition. They shouldn't be treated any differently. If they're going to have a seperate old collegians comp, they may as well tie it back in with Independent Schools comp and have Second XVIII, First XVIII and Old Collegians games together, and that would result in quite a lot of beltings.

Rostrevor OC vs St Pauls College OS? I don't see it at this point in time.

Sorry to say Stan but I have seen the best and worst of both old collegiate and metropolitan sides. But to be fair, on the whole you are probably correct.

What about, instead of splitting the SAAFL into metro and college, they incorporate any of the other metro leagues eg Southern Football League and then split to a north and south scenario with say Div 1 & 2 a combination of the best from both?

What about removing the reserves format? Not traditional and your reserves don't get to play the same day as the league I know, but by having all teams fighting for relegation and promotion would see all the grades fairer. IE, If Salisbury North's reserves are good enough to play grade 4 let them play there. We might end up with 25 grades, but so what?
