Under 17 & Under 19 Competition for SAAFL

Hi guys,

Just read this weeks newsletter, and it looks as though the SAAFL will be getting rid of the Under 18 Comp next year.

There will be an Under 19 Comp that will play on Saturday mornings at 10am when there is an A/B Game scheduled, or at 12:15 if there is only a C Grade game played.

The Under 17 comp will play on Sunday arvos and will be geographically based.

Thoughts??

Underage Competitions in 2009
In 2009, the SAAFL plans a rejuvenation of the underage competition. It will be
offering two competitions, Under 19’s on Saturday mornings at 10am when they
precede the B/A grade teams and 12.15pm when they precede a C grade match. On
Sunday afternoons, there will be a return to Under 17 Competitions that will be
geographically based. We would like to give clubs the security to commence planning
now for season 2009. From research undertaken by SANFL that eventuated in a
restructure of the underage SANFL competition, it shows that about 70% of players
come from the metropolitan area. With SANFL moving to an Under 18 competition,
this equates to about 7 teams of players that potentially could be picked up by SAAFL
clubs. Clubs that are proactive now are likely to reap the benefits in the future.
The Under 19 competition has proved to be very successful in WA and Victoria amateur
competitions and represents the strongest growth in their competitions. The Under 19
competition also creates new opportunities for Old Collegian and University Clubs to
enter teams where the Under 18 competition was impractical as school exit age made it
unviable.
The Executive Committee invites any feedback and early expressions of interest to start
new teams and any suggestions on ways the League can assist clubs in the venture of
starting a new team.

I think U/19 players should be playing senior football
They can drink with the men after the game but dont want to play with them?
Im sick of this crap with bringing kids up in cotton wool with mercy rules, etc.

Stupid idea, as Ash Man said, once you hit 18 you should be ready to play with the big boys, since you're legally classified as an adult.

The 10.15 games before the As/Bs would also totally contradict the idea of A/B/C triple headers.

I have to say I hope it doesn't happen, it's a big enough head ?*#k with U/18's, what with trying to get additional trainers and helpers to satisfy their needs. Trying to run a footy club nowadays is a bloody big task and these people don't grow on trees, the sooner the SAAFL realise that the better.

That is what I am getting at does'nt SAAFL house read the newspapers or something SANFL maybe had some valid reasons for ditching the concept (Possibly money driven from the AFL  ). So Why have they decided to run with it when the SANFL is getting out.

This IMHO would only work if the School Footy competition is dumped also. it then gives all clubs a chance to get a junior set up going if they want to have a steady flow of players. But we all know that the Inter Col bragging rights are far too important to give up in favour of developing Footballers and Club people who will eventually run the club that they play for.

I wouldn't think too many clubs would jump on board with the idea of an u/19 comp. what'll they think of next?? u/21 and u/23s?
Stupid idea SAAFL, stupid.
If you are not ready to play senior footy by the age of 18 you shouldn't be playing anyway!

I heard on the weekend that if the SANFL do scrap the U17/U19 comp, then Port Magpies are planning to use Port Districts as their 'feeder' club - they would tell all the kids who try out for the U16/U18's to go there and play if they don't make it, or are not getting a game. This would apply regardless of where the lads played their earlier junior footy. They have basically been trying to do this for years anyway, but the new changes give them a reason.

Imagine what that will do to the standard of the competition - 1 team absolutely smacking everyone else, every week. Not to mention the participation rates of lads from clubs other than Port Districts. They won't be keen on getting thrashed every week.

I can tell you our club will not stand by and let that happen, as im sure others won't either.

Thats if this is true, of course.

How can they assist clubs?

Give each interested club $5K each for a set of jumpers, shorts, socks, footys, medical gear,
Another $3K for a coach, team manager, trainers, timekeeper, canteen workers, BBQ helpers, waterboys, etc. (if this is not possible, the SAAFL finds these people for the clubs and they give them to club at no charge for the season)
SAAFLto supply umpires at no charge

Now if you think this is "over the top", try setting up another team in a club with anything less than stated above and see how you go, oh and good luck!

I hope the SAAFL do what the SANFL have, forget the idea for the reasons stated above.

This is what North Adelaide aparantly tried to set-up with Greenacres Under 18 side this year and they finished bottom.

I didnt know that. Maybe it all sounds good in theory, but doesn't and can't actually work in practice.

From me personally when I was 17, if the league club I was involved with had've told me I had to play at a certain amateur club and leave the one I had played with, with my best mates, for 10 years, I would've told them to stick it. I may not be the best example (as smac will tell you), but I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one.

Pag..there was no arrangement between North's and Greenies this year

this could not possibly happen?
that means you only get 1 year worth of players for
under 17's seein there is a under 16's comp in metro west
how would you find the players to fill the team, considering how hard it
is for some teams to fill teams in the under 18's comp this year
port districts finished third and only had 16 players for last weeks final!
this would be a stupid move bye saafl, but with saafl who knows!

That was why I stuck the 'aparantly' in there mate, didn't want to say 'allegedly' as it sounds very negative. That was the talk at the start of the year, didn't know if it went through properly or not.

Certainly an "understanding" that they would play for Greenies if not selected for North. I know for a fact that a couple of our kids were told to play there when not getting a game at North. It obviously wasn't effective though - as you said, they finished bottom.

SD..I dont believe that to be the case, Norths made it clear to us that they would not encourage any players our way if they had a local home club..and I believe they honoured that ..
