SAAFL stuff ups

Postby FOURTH ESTATE » Tue Feb 10, 2009 11:53 am

With all the talk about the D2 comp and Scotch pulling out here are my thoughts on what should be done.

Firstly Scotch & D2.

Both Scotch & SMOSH were given an opportunity to stay in D2. Smosh chose to exercise their option and go to D3, which they quite entitled to. No problems there.

Scotch made the decision to stay in D2. Now 2 months from the beginning of the season Scotch have decided that they now want to go back to D3 after advising the SAAFL that they would play D2.

Simple solution the Shadiac and his cohorts should have the ball and guts tell Scotch they gave a commitment to play D2 and that they have to honour it end of story!!!

(If I am wrong on the above facts I will stand corrected)

The leagues inaction with Edwardstown moving to the SFL was disgraceful; No one in the country while this was happening is not a way to run a business.
(Yes people are entitled to a holiday but both the President & the CEO going to Ireland should not have happened)

Edwardstown leaving the comp is not the end of the world. Some people on this forum call them sooks for leaving and going to an inferior comp get over it!!!!!
A history lesson needs to be taught here. When Edwardstown joined SAFA in 1978 they were playing a southern comp at the time that was struggling.
They had a reasonable amount of success in SAFA winning 5 A Grade flags as well as several other lower grade flags.
When SAFA folded at the end of 1995 all SAFA clubs were absolved into the SAAFL. Edwardstown one of those clubs joined in what was known as P1 at the time and played off in the Grand Final that year at Adelaide Oval against Adelaide Uni and was soundly defeated.
The club slipped to D2 several years later and floated between D1 & D2. They did not like the promotion and relegation system as this caused a lack or rivalry between clubs that they were trying to establish.
The move to the Southern League is a good fit for them as the majority of the clubs in that league are former rivals. Lets make no bones about it quite a few clubs in the SAAFL would like to play in another league where this system of promotion and relegation does not exist as well as a few other things.
Don’t blame Edwardstown for the current problem, they did what they thought was best for their club and their future and survival. I am not being an apologist for the club but have found them to be a well-run club by people who care about the club.
The area in which they are located in is an older area. They are on the border of where the SAAFL basically stops be it for a few clubs in the lower divisions and the Southern League.

good response fourth estate, i do think that the SAAFL do need to stand up and demand that Scotch do stay in Div 2 as they said Yes to staying. Will be interesting to see how Shadiac and co do go about it.

I think the promotion and relegation is an awesome system! It's just like the Premier League in England.
It give variety to competions year in and year out.

It's exciting to know that if your team is good enoguh to make the GF one year, they will be playing a higher standard of footy the following year.

Not sure whether to put this in the stuff ups or start a new thread but here goes. Heard 2 stories last night with relation to umpires for 2009.

The first was that in Div 2R only the umpires coach has decided that the club supplied umpires names will be thrown in to a hat and put around to games other than their own. To do it in one grade only would tend to point to an ulterior motive but wouldn't they be better to talk to the clubs involved? If it goes ahead expect problems getting blokes to put their hands up.

The second is that since the SANFL will effectively have a full panel available for 1 grade all games to put in to the league the coach has decided to put them all in DIV 3 for the full year. Great for DIV 3 but wouldn't you give these guys (if good enough) the chance to umpire higher?

Seem like strange decisions to me but then again I have never been able to think like an umpire.

Item 1 - as a Div2R umpire, I will NOT be told where I will umpire. I do it this way so I can plan my "other" life - where I will be from Round 1 to Round 18 - and, are the clubs I umpire for going to pay me what I get from my club? It isn't broken - leave it alone - people may accuse me of being biased towards the team I umpire for, but I have no afilliation with them - it comes with the territory, I suppose. I actually was told by "my" club that I was too hard on them - can't win - never going to.....leave it as it is. I have only cause to question a couple of clubs umpires impartiality, but across the 5 years of being a club umpire - maybe only three games.

The second item - I don't even know what you are saying - it doesn't make sense - please explain, in proper good english?

In short

The SANFL will have approximately 5 full panels of umpires surplus to requirements.

The theory of the umpiring director is to use all of these panels in one grade apparentley this will be Div 3.

My question is if these umpires are capable of umpiring higher divs or for that matter not up to Div 3 wouldn't it be better to let the natural selection process take its course.

Re reading it yes it was a bit obtuse hope this clears it up.

What then do you hope to achieve by going on about it in this forum except to further ostracise your club from the SAAFL? I'm sure your fellow committee members would be most pleased with you airing your dirty laundry on here.

Not quite mate, you have inadvertently by offering your own views have also put yourself out there as a "director" of the Broadview Football Club.

Regardless, what as an individual who has made his/her loyalties known hope to achieve for your football club that you seem to be so passionate about.

You are both being big girls.

If push comes to shove and no-one wants to go up, 4th Estate is right, Shadiac should tell Scotch to stay. Rooter, you are just trying to pick a fight.

4th Estate, what the **** is the freedom of the press and why are you bringing this non-existant thing up?

My goodness, in a previous post I have said just that and also relayed that that is exactly what Shadiac and co have told them with one variable. That being if they can find anyone to go up in their place they can drop but if not they will stay where they wanted to be originally.
