Best and Worst Ovals in the SAAFL

Postby Footy Follower » Fri Feb 13, 2009 2:33 pm

Thought this would be interesting topic of conversation.

I will start it off.....

A couple of the best grounds I have played on in the SAAFL would be:
Broadview, Pooraka, Athelstone, ROCS and Flinders Park

Worst: Old Iggies always patchy, drove past there last night and it doesn't look like an oval.
Eastern Park is always so sandy. Not sure about the shared showers either. Not sure why they don't play on the bottom oval.

It's smaller and there's no bar facilities close by, you would need binoculars.

Haha, consider yourself lucky you don't have to run laps of it fisty.

Salisbury is the best I've played on. Kilburn, Pooraka, Flinders Park and Campbelltown good too.

Hate playing at Pulteney and Old Iggies.

Adelaide Lutheran!!!!!!! Away change rooms are a disgrace you cant fit your whole team in the little shoe box!

Played at Unley when it rained was a mud pit.

Before CBCOC had the Clipsal was a great ground to play on.

Agree on Iggies and Eastern Park sh!tH0U$3.
It takes real courage to wear PURPLE!!!!!

Portland is a great ground (unbiased , of course) ;)

No easy kicks to be had there, keeps the seagulls honest !!!

i reckon park 10 is a great ground to play unless the centre square gets hard as is the beautiful uni main oval.
golden grove has a great surface.

despise pertaringa even when it was my home ground

but gaza's paddock truly is horrendous.
always forgive your enemies...nothing annoys them so much

think changerooms are a diff topic.... but yes i agree with you lutherans rooms disgrace.....or tho glenungas are worse.

But as for shit grounds, i think from what i have played on or seen, Brahma lodge is the worst with the mats they lay down on cricket pitch for footy season. Then greenacres top oval when it rains its like a pig pen. Greenacres have a perfect oval next to it but for some reason its not used.

Salisbury Oval for me! New irrigation installed over Summer as well, it is in superb condition at the moment. Be surprised if it is anything close to hard under foot this season.

Several things came to mind when I read the thread title;

Firstly, what I hated about an oval (in order):

1. condition
2. whether I felt I was playing on a cow paddock because of the location/atmosphere
3. location of the clubrooms
4. Having a cricket pitch covered by sand
5. Size

So in order of worst:

Edwardstown Baptist(defunct)/Old Iggies - by far the worst going around
Pulteney
SA Institute of Teachers (defunct)
Glenunga
Pembroke
Wingfield
TransAdelaide Tigers (defunct)
Ovingham
Portland

Secondly, what I liked about an oval (surprisingly the opposite)

Scotch - best by far that I'd played on
Payneham
Walkerville
Hope Valley
Burnside Kensington (defunct)

I'm sure I've forgotten some, but that's a starter.

It is a Grade Cricket Club and they take great pride in the reputation it has. The Sportsmans association pay their dues accordingly.
