Did you cop the team, nearly all Salisbury North boys! Hardly the best weekend to play a game against a team that's been together for a couple of years. It was a bit like the giants versus the midgets, a few big blokes in the country team.

3 blokes from SN harly makes a team.. you are right about the size of the country boys. They must drink their milk. wonder if the League will do anything about the teams that pulled their players out of the game?

SB - Jamie Thomas is coaching the U23's

Have said it for years now, every time our U23's play the country they get a touch up. Why not play the Open Age State Team V country in the middle of the year. Would be a great game to watch, atleast the body sizes might compare.

Yes totally agree SF but the problem will always be getting the open age guys to commit to playin an extra game on a weekend that they could be using to replenish/recover. The game on the weekend was no reflection of how the leagues differ as most of the guys out there wouldnt feature week to week in their teams best players.. in Div 1 anyway. would be a great spectacle to see the best Amateur players V the country.

Don't think the Under 23's have played a country team many times. They have usually played an open team from the southern league or hills league (unless that's what they call country). And from what I remember the under 23's have usually beaten those teams (I've seen two games where they have). Maybe this years team just isn't as good as the past teams.

Yeah i know about the bye week, but its been so long that i reckon most would jump at the chance to pull on a state jumper. I know a few of our guys would have been around the mark for a few years and are pretty disapointed that there is no chance of representing the state. I reckon a fair crowd would gather for a game like that.

The last few years the U/23's have played the State Country side early in the year as a curtain raiser to an AFL game.

The State Country side they play was selected from the previous years country carnival usually held on the first weekend of July.

They also play the open age Southern Football League conbined team on the June long weekend which is the game they usually win.

I reckon a SAAFL Open Age side would have been very powerful this year.

13 names that spring to mind (and there are prbably more) with good AFL/SANFL experience that could make up at least half the side could be....

Perre (Pulteney OS), Bassett (PulteneyOS ), Whiteman (Old Iggys), Wicks (TTG), Culpit (TTG), Colville (Henley), Floreani (SHOC), Brunoli (TTG), Squire (Broadview), Wintle (Broadview), Beinke (SPOC), Copping (SPOC), Donaldson (Goodwood), and perhaps even Rucciutio (PACOC)..

Add to that D.Jarman as coach and all of a sudden things are pretty experienced ...

Just read the SAAFL budget thingo, Thomas was whinging about players not being avalaible or being injured. I'm pretty sure when speaking to a club official the other day, that our club had not had one player invited out to train with the State Team. Now, i would think we would have a couple that would be a shoe in for a position. Can't whine about not having enough players if you haven't asked around. I'm sure we are not the only club either.

Shirtfront check with your Club. I believe Clubs had to nominate prospects under 23 from their Clubs to attend state training and it was not a selection policy as such from the State selectors.

Add to that Hambling (Goodwood), Wakelin (Goodwood), Illmann (Goodwood) and all of a sudden we have got close to three quarters of a team.

Apparently there were a couple from our club that decided not to go out to training but have now decided it might not be such a bad thing and will make the water bag trek to Angle Vale next week for training!

Yeah, trainings haven't worked out very well for the 23's this year.

The SANFL umpires train on wednesday nights and the SAAFL can't use the oval until 7pm, which makes training for the 23's very hard.

The 18's are lucky enough to be training at Thebby, but it's meant a change of training time until 7pm.

Makes for a late night. :(

the u/23 side has been canned for next year and beyond,

Only for the game played against SA country, got sick of being hammered by them!
