Umpiring Behaviour

On sunday
myself and a few of the boys went out and gave some support to our under 18's who were playing Gepps Cross at home!
While watching the game a few of the boys had indulged in a few cans.
Some of the umpiring that was displayed was shocking and as a result the crowd, not just us started to question some of the calls.
Early in the last quarter after a series of bad calls the ball was balled up in front of us when the umpire said loud enough for not only the players but for us boys on the hill and the parents around us "if your not playing, then shut the **** up"
This was just before he sent off a player for swearing.
Just wondering if this type of thing is acceptable and what your opinions are on the situation??

I know people will say that he shouldnt be abused and so on, but if the bloke knew the rules and wasnt continually making the wrong calls then there wouldnt be a problem!

must say well done to the older and more experienced umpire who swapped with this umpire so he couldnt cop it from the crowd, he was also a little better in his decison meaning he didnt have that problem that the other umpire did!

yeah some ppl might not agree, but its gonna happen no matter what... it doesnt give umpires the right to swear back, i think a lot of umpires power trip

if u umpire you have to expect to cop a fair bit from the crowd and players....
yeah some ppl might not agree, but its gonna happen no matter what... it doesnt give umpires the right to swear back, i think a lot of umpires power trip

im of the exact same opinion
they should be able to take it, and they shoud be prepared for it

but without them we wouldnt be able to play so we have to put up with them!

May I ask whether you have umpired before and if so how easy it was for you?

I did field in the mid 1990s in Melbourne and switched to goals because the rules set down by the umpire panels that I was involved with said you shouldn't be too close to the play or should be in a certain position.

That is a significant reason why frees or incidents are missed because I thought that you should be 15-20m from a congested pack where the ball is unlikely to come out and in a position where you would not be caught out if the ball spat out of the pack. Instead I was told you had to be at least 30-40m away and couldn't go where I thought was the appropriate position (remembering you had 2 umpires who should position themselves well enough to "both sides" of a pack and no get caught out if the ball came free).

That is why I have been a goalie since 2000 (in Melbourne and now in Perth) and have not been abused once by a crowd member over a decision that I have made and I enjoy what I do.

I have umpired before
only once and It was between the team I now play for and a team I played one season for!
but from all reports from players
I was the best umpire they have ever had
I umpired how I would want a game to be umpired and let things go
unless there was actually a free kick!

This happened in a game i was playing on the weekend...

A player questioned an umprie during the first quarter with "how was it holding the ball if he landed on my head" The umpire gave him a straight red card. Im not sure if he swore at him but even if he did this is disgraceful. This sending off didnt have an affect on the result but still i cant believe what goes through their heads.....

After the game the other umpire can into our change rooms and told the manager that if the player apologised to the umpire than he would change it from a red to a yellow card. Obviously he knew he was in the wrong

Fisty, I love the fact that you blokes were giving the bloke crap (any swear words in the stuff you were dishing out?) and then the umpy reacts and you get all offended.

Dogwatcher... IS fisty being paid to watch the game? and control the game etc... he should be setting an example... however... a bunch of pissed blokes should NEVER be used to set good examples.

It is the Amatuer League, therefore the umpires are Amatuer.

I think you should be the one prepared to see average ( Amatuer ) umpiring.

Having said all that what the umpire did ( swearing at the crowd ) was wrong.

Players cop it from opposition crowds...if i turned to the boundary while i was playing and told them to shut the F up, im pretty confident Id be reported and sent off.

I believe all Div 7 games and 1 Div 6 had one umpire

We have been lucky that the magoos umpires have helped out with the A grade games in the last two rounds. If both umpires we unable to help out with the A grade then we would have been stuffed. Also had one of our club umpires help out when one of the magoos umpires couldnt help out with the A grade.

i was one of the players who came out on the sunday and sat on the the hill to support our under 18 lads and not only was his umpiring decissions terrible but so was his behaviour.
i can tell you that we used no abusive language as we were sittin reasonable close to women and children, he sent a player of ours of early in the game for swearing when this player returned to the oval he called out throw as everyone does when they feel someone has disposed of the ball illegally the umpire then said i have had enough of you and sent him off again, this lad who who was sent off twice played in our grade side the day before, he is a good kid and he has never been sent off a football field in his life before this day.
i think you can tell what kind of person someone is when they change there name to flintoff after an ashes series, what a knob.
and if he is to send someone off the field for swearing, you would think its not aloud for himself to use the same profanities

the biggest thing that he did wrong was the fact he sent someone off for swearing but would do it clearly to the crowd!
Im used to shit umpires, as someone said its the amatuer league, I just thought this particular umpires behaviour was the worst Ive seen for a while!

No umpires were supplied by the SAAFL to ANY Div 7 games. Clubs had to appoint there own.

According to the SAAFL, 3 were unavailable and 9 were injured for Round 2.
