I hope someone can come up with something better than that awful Rec Footy. Got involved a couple of years ago and it was a complete effing joke. Unclear rules - even the league couldn't provide clarity.
BIG opportunity for someone to come up with a summer (off season) version of the game to allow players and umpires to keep fit. It needs to be "non contact" - smaller numbers - and some decent set of rules that everyone can understand. Not a clone of Netball - perhaps something like the Gaelic - no tackling, bumping with feet on the ground (but not forceful) - no front on contact - no holding. And to counter people just running with the ball - no bounces - force people to move the ball around.
Any contact in the marking contest is out, except a clean punch of the ball (a bit like basketball)
NEVER going to get it completely right but REC footy is really crap - ok for kids and women but not proper adult male footballers.

I know a lot of blokes used to play in that Gaelic Comp at St Marys years ago. They reckoned it was easily the best preparation they had fitness/touch wise leading into a season. I assume that this no longer is around?

I was in Queensland the other week and managed to play a game of "touch rugby" for the inlaws side, brilliant way to keep fit surprisingly and the game is a bit more similar to football then many would think.
The one part i did really enjoy is there is a definate set of rules and they are easily understood by all, so its not to hard for them to find refs as anyone who plays can also ref, very basic rules.
You may struggle to find a league in SA though but was very very very enjoyable.

Womens gaelic sounds like a good spectator sport.
