According to the new SAAFL rag the league is looking to replace the salary cap & bring in the player points system that they use in the country for 2010 for a trial basis first then to bring it in permanently....How will this effect the league?

Will this be used purely in the higher divisions or over the whole SAAFL ??
I can see it has merits in the country leagues but surely the amount of players out in the SAAFL 'pot' would make something like this difficult to administer ??

Don't see the need for it in the SAAFL.

Why don't they worry about the things that need to be fixed- e.g. UMPIRING!

If it were to be implemented the league would need to make the spread of junior teams more even. Otherwise the clubs like Gepps Cross with 16 junior teams will become mini monopolies.

It would be silly to "zone" adults to certain clubs without zoning the juniors.

What about all the young adults who move to the city from the country? How many points are they worth?

It will never happen.

We were talking about this on the weekend.

I think it has it's merits.

Because Hope Valley is a strong junior club.

the big issue i see would be the classing of kids from school. because when i was a kid i played for PNU on sundays but went to PAC would i come under both teams?? that would be the only huge headache i can see.
otherwise it definatly has its merits because the salary cap is a joke! there is no way cash can be monitered at the big clubs who spend it.

Would need to know hoe it would apply for College sides. For a college side for instance that doesnt pay players and then be over the points, it defeats the whole purpose. For instance SHOC or a Uni who dont pay, but have a fair few players with League experience, how would it work?

correct me if im wrong but i beleive the points system in the country works somethig like this

5 points afl experience
4 points sanfl experience
3 import palyer
2 or 1 for local player

its something like that
it would be impossible for a lower ranked college side to be over the points cap

I believe different comps have different points systems, I think it's going to take the SAAFL to study each of the comps and come up with a happy medium that will suit it's needs.

But as it said, it will be advantageous because it will make it harder for cashed up clubs to buy a premiership side and it's more transparent as it's obvious that the current salary cap can't be managed.

I think you will find the Community football league will standardise all points systems.

I received a copy of the standardised system yesterday. I only briefly skimmed over it as I had a meeting last night but I was under the impression that the APPS will be standardised across Country Leagues by 2011. I don't think that this included the amateur League.

You're right, in terms of the actual system itself, however, you'll find that the SFL have a 14 point system and the GSFL have a 25 point system etc... that's just an example of course, but I think the main difference between the 2 is that one has points allocated for ALL players and one doesn't allocate points for "locals"

BL&G do it differently again in terms of what each type of player is worth.

No the SFL have 35 points for the bottom sides and the top 6 have 32 points. The GSFL have 14 points with junior players being minus 1 .

It's not about zoning, it's about valueing the worth and experience of a player with a number of points.
Junior clubs will only assist if their players find their way into the A grade system at that club.
If a junior plays AFL and comes back to his junior club, Points value is zero. Once a player has been at a club for 2+ years, irrespective of where he came from he will be zero points.
Using Adam Heuskes as an example, last junior club, Gepps Cross, retires from Brisbane comes back to Gepps Cross, zero points. Wants to go to Hectorville so will be worth 5 points
Recruits from the country are 1 point unless they have played at SANFL or AFL level in the previous 3 years.
That's my understanding of it anyhow.

Knew I'd get it the wrong way around  but I'm sure everyone gets the idea on the difference in allocation of points though

If that's the case, what about TTG? They've got 28 teams or something like that.
That's a monopoly but good luck to them, they do it very well and just happen to be in an area that's growing.

yeah, but it's an area that they essentially share with GG and Modbury, both of which are also strong junior clubs.

The points system seeme to be working well in the GSFL
As Shoe boy stated the Community Board has a state wide point system, pretty much based on the GSFL Blueprint...which will be implemented for 2010 for the associated Leagues.
I don't think SAAFL is part of this.... but should not stop it happening
1. It only applies to the A Grade Team
2. It sort of stops heaps of players from moving to a club in one year if they are all A Graders
3. Very easy to administer...very easy
4. You do have to plan your recruiting
5. Most importantly, understand the document

I had a discussion with someone from SAAFL about how it would affect college sides

He said that if the club declares itself purely amateur, the points system would not apply to that club
