Machete was Gepps Cross U18s game wasn't it?

Ingle Farm vs TOS was Rigney kicked a player in the head whilst on the ground, brawl broke out, his old man came flying down to get involved.. then grabbed knife off the BBQ to try and stab another Farmer.

A grade were locked in the change rooms for like an hour after while cops sorted it.

Bedge was good that day

I realise that it's for the best, but part of me misses when things got to be a bit more dramatic on here

How I wasn't in the best players that day is a disgrace, whilst Ben Round and Scott Smart between them had 11 goals kicked on them.

Must've been encouragement awards for trying hard and sucking. 8)

Was looking at the u18 comp this morning, am I reading it right that there are only 2 divisions with teams of 6 & 7?

There are some big clubs not represented in the comps, esp south of the city, where do all the kids go? play senior footy?

Senior footy.
The 18s comp is garbage anyway and most don't want to play in it.
The better kids are playing As or B's on the Saturday anyway or are at SANFL clubs and the Sunday arvo timeslot doesn't fit with many 17 / 18 year olds.

Big drop off with 31 u16.5 teams down to 13 u18 teams, you could be a 16yo who has no other option than to play senior footy.

No teams from Goody Saints, PHOS, Edwardstown shocked me.

As usual you overlook college football Dutchy and those 3 clubs you mention are in the heart of private school demographics so many of those 17 to 18 year olds are prepared to settle for playing 12 to 14 school games plus deal with study and casual jobs. If you look at the clubs fielding U18 teams you will see they are mostly in areas less affected by private school attendance.

But the good ones whether public or private will get a full season at a SANFL club or a full season of college/SANFL. Pre-COVID I believe there were around 20 to 22 U18 teams nominated but a significant drop off as a result of COVID.

Despite the odd incident spread across over a hundred games every weekend, the AdFL would easily be the cleanest league in SA and there are plenty of 17 and 18 year olds running around across all levels of the league that don't seem to have any issue playing against the big boys. In fact a lad is more likely to cop one from a hormonal hero in U18 footy than he is in senior footy in the AdFL.

Don't get me wrong, if you've got the numbers like we have (just), by all means field an U18 team but its not the be all and end all.

PNU would have fielded an 18s side under normal circumstances but the appetite wasn't there from the players for the abridged season post COVID.

As such they're sprinkled between school footy, SANFL U18s and the reserves and Cs.

In an area demographically surrounded by colleges and being in circumstances where most years a number of boys are fortunate enough to find themselves in SANFL u18 squads fielding 18s is a constant challenge. As a matter of practice we've found that for every two under 16s you get a full season from an under 18 (with gaps plugged by over agers and under 16s)

If a u18 doesn't get a game at a SANFL club, where do they generally play if they you are a Div 1 club? Div 1 Ressies?

Most of them go back to their original junior club to play.

Depends on many many factors. Complete horses for courses. Have had kids straight into the As, some in the C's. Work together with the league club to work out what's best for the individual involved and the club

U18’s has always been an indifferent comp, in a way that it completely depends on that individual clubs challenges at the time. I was involved as a junior in the SFL when it was collectively the strongest league in SA when you roll in juniors and seniors. Back then, if you were any good as a junior you were either playing SANFL or Senior Footy at your club as a priority In the A’s or B’s - That’s a Saturday comp and Sunday comps are different again for 18’s.

The Victorian way of calling U18’s as 3rds Is bang on for me. This is not underestimating the value of 18’s, it has a place however it completely is reliant on where your clubs direction and player availability is at for that given year. There are so many factors that cripple any clubs ability to consistently send out a reliably strong U18’s outfit - Especially north of the City of Onkaparinga Council.
