Alcohol ban at SAAFL games.

Article in todays Advertiser about the possibility of no alcohol being served from 2pm to 5pm at SAAFL games. What the? Once again the moronic actions of a few are used to justify the penalising of all clubs. Interesting that the SAAFL allowed games to be played when some clubs had not paid their fees as they believed it would impact on the finances of the clubs hosting the games. Well I would of thought that alcohol sales on an Sat arvo at metropoliotan clubs would be one of the biggest income streams for a club throughout the year. Fair dinkum if there are clubs that are repeat offenders in this area then penalise them not clubs that are run properly and act responsibly.

I thought there was an email from the league last week to all clubs about speaking in the media directly and bringing the league into disrepute. Obviouly the umpires coach wasn't CC'ed in on the email.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't amatuer league footy in Victoria made up of only College and Old Scholar teams? Probably a bit easier to police a no alcohol policy if that is the case as sports/social clubs would not be located at the oval.

we played Unley @ their home ground on Saturday and at the Start of the 3rd Quarter a group of Our supporters standing near our interchange bench were approached by a Unley presumably commitee member and asked not to take alcohol onto the ground at the 3 1/4 break

My understanding is that you are not meant to take Alcohol on to the ground now and this has been the case for some years.

I agree with the earlier post that is clubs **** comment on this issue why can the Umpires?

But lets have a look at the issues he listed in the paper;
Unless some teams are letting thier players drink during the game half of his points and general direction revolve around the conduct of players.

So what does it mean?

We have umpires and The Advertiser working togther and no one will ever understand what they are getting at.

The no alcohol on the ground at breaks has been in for about 5 years but it is rare a club polices it. The SAAFl brought in a new rule at the end of last year during finals that clubs needed an official to police this and crowd behaviour. Fantastic idea for clubs that can't get enough people to help out already. The SAAFL have this thing where they want to treat clubs all in one way, I would of thought a solution is if a club screws up with spectators drinking being the problem, force that club to pay for a security guard at their own expense and let the other clubs continue with their normal operations. Although with this you would need to be absolutely certain whose clubs spectators were causing the problems. I think the real need is for visiting officials to police their own spectators.

Playin in an early seniors game and then sittin and watchin your A Grade and havin a berr with your team mates is part of Footy folk law - change it and watch the SAAFL competition go in to Anarchy !!!

Authorities should ban alcohol at all Port Lincoln FL venues as soon as possible. That way I may be able to remember the game and stop me yelling wise arse remarks at opposition players....
But on a serious note, for the authorities to consider such a move would suggest that they themselves have a problem with alcohol or a similar substance. The crows are screaming 'cos they want all seats filled at aami to bolster catering returns, and the saafl is thinking about not selling booze...amazing really.

I have it on good authority that the Advertiser has completely misrepresented the Umpires Coach to get the big story...anyone surprised at that.

I believe there will be something going out to Clubs from the league in this regard.

Bet the major sposors of the league, West End, were impressed with the publicity.

Did anyone see the results of the Advertiser phone poll yesterday regarding this? If so, can you post it.

Also, latest SAAFL newsletter highlights about dealing with the media by Clubs but makes NO reference to this issue at all.
