Joe Leck - 300 Games for Mitchell Park

Postby morell » Tue Jun 14, 2011 3:50 pm

This week game will signify a massive milestone for one of our clubs greatest ever stalwarts - Joe Leck will play his 300th game for Mitchell Park.

Joe Leck is the beating heart of the Mitchell Park Footy club, he has been there for over 20 years, played juniors, won premierships, won association medals - he has done it all as a player on the field. Trying to come up with one highlight on Joe’s playing career is next to impossible, he is the type of player that always lifts when we need it, either by kicking a goal from the boundary or lofting a perfect pass to another forward, he is (well, maybe was - he is after all approaching 40!) one of those players that seemingly had more time and more space than everyone else.

Joey is the spiritual leader of our team, his rev-ups and speeches have had me ready to run through walls, laugh, fight and want to cry all at once. On a personal note Joe is perhaps one of the main reasons I have stayed at a club, which, in the past has had an unenviable reputation, poor on field results and limited juniors. Every time I have contemplated looking elsewhere to play a game of footy the thought of letting Joe down or losing his respect has made it impossible to leave, he is the main voice in my head when it’s cold and raining and the hammy is feeling a bit tight for training - the power of his personality is that strong.

Despite the glowing words above I was originally quite confronted by Joe, he can be quite intense and suffers from the proverbial white line fever, one particular day he called me out for not being tight enough on my man in defence - which I thought was a bit rich coming from a forward pocket and gave him a spray back - Joe then proceeded to run the length of the field, took me aside, and merely asked for a better effort next time and that he just wants to get the best out of me. His ability to understand how different players can be and still find ways to motivate are unparalleled and from that point on Joe has been a mentor and someone I look up to.

Given that his playing achievements are so numerous and plentiful it is truly a testament to his off field dedication, hard work, perseverance and personality that it dwarves his on field credentials. Joe has pumped numerous thousands of dollars into the club, probably being the difference between staying alive and not - either through organising sponsorship, marketing fund raisers, running club events, raffles, auctions, mice races, games nights, volunteering for the Lions club, banging the player subs drum - Joe does it all.

Every club has their great volunteers, their great players, their great administrators, their great blokes. Rarely do they happen to be one person.

Here is his profile on our website:

every club has one,but in my time in footy and across the different states i have travelled, played and coached,he above all is in the top of my head when it comes to setting up a club and what it stands for
the traits, culture, discipline and the nature of the club i have tried to build at ovies this year arebased a lot on the things i picked up for joe while their
his overall football skills ,motivation and uncompromising style is what you love most about this guy but more important is his ability to talk to anybody and everyone, make all people welcome and his love of life
he is extremely humble and one of the best family men you will ever encounter
i sincerly wish him the best of luck for saturday and hope all the lions rally behind joe on his big day
knowing joe he wont want much said about the day but will be more concerned about the win
we stand as one
we fight as one
we win and lose as one
we are one

Well done and congratulations to Joe. Have played against him a few times back a few years ago and always respected him on the field as a tough and skilled opponent who obviously wears his heart on his red, green and white guernsey which he should be proud of. I remember a game at Mitchell Park and I was doing OK and he dead set belted me to keep me in line for the rest of the game. I always thought he was a great clubman and I guy I would have liked being a team mate of. A guy who sticks by thru thick and thin, good times and bad.

Well done Joe... :ymapplause:

Pretty much! He has said he is just hoping for two wins.

Hopefully the boys can lift for the hairy bastard.

haha, that did make me laugh. I dare say you weren't the first nor last!

The funniest on-field moment from Joe was in the Div 6 GF Vs Ingle Farm in 2002. There were fights galore, as there often was with Mitchell Park Vs Ingle Farm games back then, one IF guy went a bit far and started throwing some pretty serious hay-makers, other players run in and quell the situation, 5 seconds later Joe then runs in with the ball in hand and dead set gridiron throws the ball into the back of the Ingle Farm players head from a meter away - starting it all up again. Joe was told in no uncertain terms to get off the field by coach Trevor "Wal" Bennetts.

Typical Joe. A bit silly but bloody funny and his heart was in the right place. One of the funniest things I have ever seen and is now part of Mitchell Park folklore.

My best Joe leck memory was an after the siren kick for goal against Henley. He has taken the mark at the top of the goal square and the sirens sounds . So he proceeds to give the Henley bloke on the mark the finger before going back and kicking the ball almost into his own backyard. Good times

He did actually get a back wax recently...looked like one of those hairless cats. Not pretty.

Actually raises another Joe moment at a club fundraiser when he sold wax strips for $5 a pop and you could literally tear strips off him. It went a bit wrong and I am pretty sure he lost some skin. Was very, very funny.

Anything for the club.

Ah, Shenanigans, many a Mitchell Park player came a cropper there. On the other hand I know of few relationships that have been "initiated" from that place as well.

I hope it wasn't the time Nat threw up over the bar?

Thought I would copy in a response from the man himself:

Hi Guys

I want to congratulate the club and the people that supported me to turn on a great day for the big 300, Saturday will go down as one of my most memorable days of my career.

Nat will not want to hear it but the lead up and the day was very humbling and emotional. Saturday worked out perfect for myself and my family. I could not have asked for a better day.

I also think the club would have benefited from the day too with ladies day, Brad Steele's 100 and Kym's 40th. With all the people at the footy, the way the club looked and us winning a few games the club is heading in the right direction and that is the main thing for all of us.

Once again thank you to everyone again, I love the framed momento, straight to the bar room...

Cheers Joe
