Home Finals based on Brewery Sponsor

Postby Barbara » Fri Aug 25, 2006 1:03 pm

Just interested in hearing your opinion about teams missing out on hosting finals games based on what Brewery sponsors them? What clubs have missed out? Is it fair that alcohol sponsorship is the major focus at this time of year given certain issues that seem to be a focus of the SAAFL i.e. participation in the Good Sports Program, Match Day Officials, potentially banning alcohol from being served during games, etc?

I'd be interested to know how many of the clubs in the league don't have West End on tap, I would think it would only be 3 or 4 over the league.

Personally I don't think the rule has much sense anyway, clubs who have West End on tap still sell Coopers and Tooheys in stubbies anyway. What's the difference?

I think because Tooheys are owned by Lion Nathan they don't worry about it. It's really only CUB and Coopers. PHOS have Coopers and CUB on tap and are playing at Kilburn this week. It's interesting that the SAAFL can force sponsorship on a club when even the AFL can't do it.

and yet they don't police support of other league sponsors i.e. elastplast. Saw alot of advertising for tape suppliers in the off-season that weren't compliant.

North Haven and Fitzroy (if they made finals) would be 2 to miss out i'd think as they from memory are sponsored by Coopers (they may not be nowadays)

BLOODY PEMBROKE!!!!

The Elastoplast thing couldnt be policed anyway, due to the amount of bad batches of tape coming through the league couldnt possibly expect clubs to spends thousands of dollars of tape which either a) falls apart and /or b) starts to thread..

West End (Or Lion Nathan) have craked down on their sponsorship agreement with the league. Every jumper must be taken in to SAAFL house for an audit to check if it complies with SAAFL rules which includes a logo of SAAFL and West End. for any jumpers that do not comply its a fine ($20 i think) per non complying jumper.

Every club with a bar though would sell Coopers or CUB in some form, whether it's on tap or in cans or stubbies? What is the big deal about having not being able to have it on tap but allowed to sell it in other forms?

The big deal for the brewery is a committment to the product i.e. they install a glycol system and the club commits to the product for 3 - 5 years. Then it's up for negotiation between the brewery rep and the club regarding other products being allowed (if allowed the brewery would demand best possition in fridges), promotions, sponsorship and rewards for litres sold, etc.

I think the whole idea has something to do with signage, ie: on taps etc... as well as the fact that the West End make more profit on tap beer/keg sales than with stubby or can sales.

Sorry Barbara, didnt see your previous post, but we run along the same lines (excuse the pun) :)

I understand the concern,

But why has no one said anything about having to pay to play a home finial, I think it stinks and is just an easy grab for cash by the league
When to much sport is never enough

The payment for a home final replaces the gate takings ($6 a head) if you pay for a home final you get the opportunity to make it back. Canteen BBQ car parking and bar. Neutral finals venues get it for free but have to collect admission fees for the league.

pay 1,000 to make 4,000 to 5,000 depending on venue. i think a good outcome for teams who make the finals and also can have home ground advantage.

Interesting how Scotch gets a home final, but the school will not let them badge their guernseys with the West End logo. Does that mean they will cop a $20 fine per guernsey for non-compliance when they undergo the apparel audit?
