SAAFL Heat Policy - a reminder

Hi all

Each to their own but the amount of clubs I'm seeing on FB who are going to attempt to train tonight is bloody insane.

It's unnecessary and IMO irresponsible. Missing training tonight is not going to make or break your chances of making finals. It will only put more strain on bodies and take longer to recover - not to mention the potential legal ramifications for your club if something happens.

If you are silly enough to rigorously train in 46c heat because you think you'll get any benefit out of it- at least be responsible enough to keep any players under the age of 18 away and tell them to stay home.

Here's the heat policy for those playing at home: (scroll to page 48)

further to my post above - I've just been informed that those in charge from committee down, ie; coaches etc.. may be also held personally liable if anything does happen.

Professional sports teams have more resources than amateurs.

Professional athletes would be far more likely to prepare themselves for extreme heat than average Joe.

Not saying I disagree with this as we trained last night and it was bloody hot, but I can't see anywhere in the SANFL or SAAFL rules or regulations that says anything about not training due to heat. Maybe if people are to be held accountable the SAAFL can set some actual guidelines for people to follow.

No, you're right, there isn't - this is where common sense comes into play.

Trainings aren't sanctioned by the league and therefore can't can't govern them. (to the best of my knowledge)

Clubs under law would be required to have their own polices when running things they are in control of; should something happen and there is no policy, then this may constitute a breach of duty of care to anyone who suffers injury.

Im sure if Shrekky was allowed to post, he'd agree ;)

Can't use the term common sense these days because there is too many variables for interpretation.

What may be "common sense" to one person, might not be for another and vice versa.

End of the day it's i guess it's up to the individual to make the decision on whether they train or not and I can't see how the support staff can be held liable, not like they are mandatorily enforcing training.. They are just there to provide a service and if someone wants to engage that service then that's their prerogative

Great to see the Southern Football League send out a guide line for their HEAT POLICY which includes guidelines for certain temperatures. Will the SAAFL follow suit? It says in the document the policy has been adapted from the 2013 SANFL policy.
