I will never forget that because it sounded like a bloody thunderclap.

I remember getting ready in the change rooms for the next game, while he was in the medico room waiting for the ambulance. Wasn't a good way to prepare...

I bet it wasnt. How did his recovery go? Is he playing still or given it up?

I saw him a couple of weeks ago and I believe it healed well.

He isn't playing though bit I thinks it's because the injury really affected his job which he had only just started.

Similarly to Woodu, my old man was trainer at Ingle Farm. They used to regularly get flogged back in the 80s. He came home one night, and starting crying. A guy came off the ground, collapsed and died. Futile attempts by my old man and ambulance staff didn't revive him. I understand the Alan Coad (sp?) medal still exists out there.

As far as injuries go, I've seen dislocated elbows, broken legs, dislocated hip - none that have happened to me fortunately enough. How guys come back from those injuries and play again is beyond me. They deserve a medal for getting over the mental hurdle. I have done shoulders, jaw, knee (not badly), and the first ball you go for on the comeback trail is terrifying.

As a kid I saw a bloke in the A's slide in to the fence @ St.Marys Park and got his leg caught under the fence and clean snap in half from the angle it got caught the fence underneath combined with the force of the impact.

In playing I saw a bloke clash heads and when he got up and looked @ me the slash from his hairline to his eye socket gave me a very good view of his forehead in terms of bone from skull. Never forget his scream when he realised the thing covering his eyes wasn't hair but infact skin from the forehead flopping across.
Can you bring a man to his feet when defeat is on repeat?

Dislocated hip they had to sedate the guy in hospital to put it back it
Both ulner and radius in forearm pointed out at a 45 degree angle the guy had broken more bones then he had played games that day his first and last game
Ring finger snapped in 3 place with an open fracture
And the worse not a footy injury was when in the army reserves as a medic guy fell into razor wire slice his femoral artery quick Action saved his life not one i want to repeat ever

Cant remember a lot of them, but few years back one of our lads copped some friendly fire and had a tooth lodged in the head of a team mate and we had to stop the game to find the other one on the ground.

I never played a game without one. I swear to always use one and I encourage my son to do so too. I copped quite a few hits to the mouth and face in my time and if it wasnt for the mouth guards, Id fit right in in Hillbilly territory.

I have to say, I didn't see this injury but it's a mate of mine and I have to pass it on.

He was playing country footy for Mt Torrens and was known to be a hard rover. Tackled hard, played hard and when there was a bit of a melee, he'd be amongst it.

Anyway, during general play, he was chasing a bloke and had to hurdle a fallen player. He hurdled the player but the player lifted his studs right into his knacker bag.

He went off the field after feeling a "bit weird". He opened up the shorts and noticed one of his precious items was the size of a grapefruit.

He went to the local hospital and I'll try and remember via paraphrase the rest of the story;

"I went in the back of xyz's ute, spread legged cos it f***** hurt so much, clutching my balls because I thought they were going to explode. I sat up but every bump we went over hurt like bejeezus.

We got to the hospital and saw the doc. The doc reassuringly rang ahead to the local specialist "we need to operate, NOW."

What had happened was that he'd been split open. One of his tes-tickles had been split right down the middle and the contents had filled his ball bag.

He got operated on but has been able to have two kids despite this. Good one to tell the grandkids!!!

Correct Alan Coad.
Was a player helping out filling in the numbers.
His jumper number has been retired.

Ugghhhhhh....some of these stories.

I am forever thankful I never broke a leg - unlike a mate of mine who filled in for Kersbrook B grade last season (in his first game ever for a club other than Elizabeth) and broke his leg in the opening five minutes of the match.

I've dislocated and put fingers back in, many times over the years. Nothing like seeing your fingers look like an s-bend.

Got kicked in the nuts once and had an ambulance take me to hospital - nothing as gory as the story above. As a teenager, though, I found it pretty confronting having all of these paramedics, doctors and nurses checking out my sack.

My worst injury was when I copped a shoulder to my kidneys from a team-mate. It was in the last quarter. I went down quickly but struggled up. The trainers tried to take me to the changeroom but I made them take me to the other side of the oval (it was a local derby), as I wanted to see if I'd recover. The opposition supporters were abusing me as I came off, calling me all sorts of names.
At the end of the game, I went back to the rooms. Everyone wanted to call an ambulance for me, "No, no, I'll be fine".
Then on the drive home, I caved and went to the hospital, where I spent the night, pissing blood.
My side was black, the bruise went from my hip to just under my armpit.
I checked myself out the next day and moved house, with plenty of help.
BY Wednesday night I was back in hospital with blood clots. I stayed there for four days after that.
Missed eight weeks. That first contest afterwards was pretty damn scary.
You're my only friend, and you don't even like me.

Broke my leg 2 minutes into the first trial of the season after probably doing my best preseason! :(
