But should our C Grade play C1 or D7 (or D6) or just try to work out the best competition available?
I'm going to ask it...... Would the top C1 teams beat a D6 or 7 top team?
I remember the old days when Uni played their B Grade in A3 and C Grade in A1R and so on
Now that's something to aim for

Best C1 sides would have struggled against SW and PAOC (in my opinion). Would have been competitive with St Pauls, Adelaide Uni and Flinders Uni and would have been substantially better than the bottom 5 D7 teams.

Finn, how do you rate Uni's C1 side against the D7 side?

The div 7 side is younger aside from one or two and most players harbour ambitions to play higher. The c1 side is taller, older and harder and has a core of players who have played a grade or equivalent; at training competitive drills are shared reasonably equally. The flip side is that the c1 side is more injury prone.
I'd back the c1 side in a majority of matches personally but that's only because I'm biased. In a traditional club structure the sides would be more mixed and both would probably improve but they're more divided along the desire to play higher than the ability to do so. The main difference I see between div 7 and c1 is that div 7 sides are fitter.

So, in comparison, our D7 is the feeder for the D1R side.
Which one is for Uni? C1 or D7?

There's no hard and fast rule but Generally div 7 but quite often they come from c1; it depends on type of player required and who's playing whom.

Great insight to Uni and the way you go about it Finn. I guess it's new ground for PAOC Jimmy so the best advice is to be taken from people in a similar situation. Again just a personal observation but in my time as coach at MP we would always try to play Uni's C's in a trial because my belief was that their C grade teams were about Div 7. For me Div 7/7res and C1, you could throw a blanket over them, I've seen Div 1 players come back from injury and play C's through Div 6/7, and not dominate.

Interesting last comment Yank Man as I have seen that quite a bit.
We have one player who was not in the best players in the B Grade. Put him in the A Grade and he dominates.
The reason being is he's two steps ahead of a B Grader. I started watching for this scenario in the B Grade this year
The good players can be out of the immediate play but are running for the 2nd (or even 3rd) handball or kick which a good A Grader is trained to execute knowing he'll be there.
It's like a game of chess knowing what's unfolding and trusting the guys around you to know what they are doing and be able to execute it
You just dont get it to the same extent in D7 (although our D7 are coached the same way)
I have to say D1 has amazed me this year with the class of players and pattern of play I have seen

A repeat of the second semi sees the Blacks go up against Henley in c1 this Saturday morning. May be worth watching for those unsure about the level comparison of c1 and div 7.
And, of course, go the Blacks.

Saw Shelley Fulton was playing (and dominating) for Uni's on the weekend... What's last years D3 medalist doing in C1?

I'll be totally absorbed in the D1R match trying to decide whether either team could beat a D5, 6 or 7 side...... :-k :-k

That shouldn't take too long to work out. Both teams in very good nick and should be a cracking game.

Had a child, didn't want to train twice a week and lives in Thebarton. Knew some of the guys playing apparently and has fitted into the social side of the the Blacks c1 team (the Chardonnay socialists) very well. He's been injured for a lot of the year but has struck form at a good time.

It was wonderful to see what Rocs were able to achieve without their glorious umpire in the finals.

See this so often in lower grades that teams that get too supported by their umpire during the year end up failing in finals.
