Definition of a win

Postby Footy Chick » Sun May 14, 2017 4:25 pm

Just heard on the newsbreak that the Dees "Thrashed" the Crows by 41 points.

I wouldn't exactly call that a thrashing on the win scale, it's a big win - but would you classify it as a thrashing?

Time to establish a win scale I reckon, so wins and losses can't be under or overstated

1-10 points - thriller, I think that can be agreed upon for the best part...

What type of margin do you classify as a thrashing?

What's worse, a thrashing or a thumping?

If a team completely dominates the contest.
Last half Melbourne 12 goals Crows 3 goals.

On referencing last nights match

It was a thrashing. Crows were expected to win by the margin they lost by.

So it's fair to say that a thrashing isn't as simple as the numbers at the end of the game but is also defined by the expectations of the teams before the game?

Yep, that's my take, if it was the other way around it would've been a win.

Any win v Port is a thrashing/thumping. That's all that matters.

I think it also depends on how the game pans out. Melbourne outscored the Crows by something like 68 points in the last two-and-a-half quarters, that is a thrashing, even if the final margin might not reflect the dominance they showed.

agree with this..i look at a thumping as being a thrashing but with a scary scoreline to go with it..

It is more about margin for me.

Carlton were thrashed by Port at Adelaide Oval a few weeks ago. But Melbourne didn't 'thrash' Adelaide. 40 odd points isn't a thrashing I wouldn't have thought. Adelaide were thrashed in the second half but not overall (if that makes sense).

Maybe 60 points is the threshold in my mind. I'm thinking 12 goals is definitely a thrashing, but 8 goals isn't.... so 10 goals would be about right.

What if you expected and were expected to win by say 10 goals, and you lose by 7 goals? Would you consider that a thrashing?

Nah I wouldn't TBH. Because I don't see a 7 goal margin as a thrashing..

So by your theory of a 17 goal expected turn around, if Port were expected to win by 14 goals but lost by 3 goals, is that also a thrashing?

I'll answer that question with this:

Correct. If I was going in expecting to win by 14 goals I would be saying 'I expect to thrash them today'. If I was expecting 14 goals and lost by 3 I would firstly spew and the say 'we got beaten by 3 goals'.

Conversely when i went to the Carlton game at Adelaide Oval I expected to be beaten by 10-12 goals. We were thrashed although by my expectation we only lost by 3 more goals than i expected.

if a team gets the first 10 kicked against them, and then with the game over meanders for the next 3 quarters, but ends up in an 8 goal win, thats still a thrashing

I'd call that a 2nd half thrashing

The overall game result could be called a big win, great win and many other things, definitely not a thrashing
