The last two years bordered on an absurdity. This is a desperately needed correction

Absolutely needed a correction, but lets not over correct. Last year the interpretation was that players could take possession and have 2 to 3 steps before they were deemed to have prior opportunity. Players exploited the rule and it led to congestion. Today it was like every player who took possession was deemed to have had prior opportunity. Hopefully it settles next week.

The way they played the rule at times last year made it a complete disincentive to tackle at times. Some sides played borderline basketball tactics to great effect.

Payneham and Tanunda had a fun hit out. Payneham up by a few but I suspect if everyone with a surname Westhoff wasn't at Adelaide Oval celebrating the 250 things would have been very tight

Complete turnaround on tthe holding the ball interpretation. Last year we would have seen, on average about 3 or 4 holding the ball decisions paid, which was too few, but today there were about 40. It was ridiculous. Hopefully they get it right come round 1. Raggies will go alright in Div 2, Elliot look a very good player.

The over correcting of the rule is disgraceful. Was frustrating for both of our sides out there today. Some ridiculous decisions that even AFL wouldn’t have paid.
The problem was last year the umps took too long to blow the whistle for a ball up, so it lead to a lot of dangerous sling tackles and then melees.
The umps have absolutely got this interpretation wrong now. It needs to be fixed. Otherwise there is absolutely no incentive for the player going hard at the ball. May as well just let the bloke grab the ball so you can tackle him and get an easy free kick.

I was at the SCG last night and the HTB has definitely changed for the better.
Biggest change in the AFL is you get pinged if you don’t get rid of the ball correctly.
It will be interesting to see the change in the C9AFL

Well we don’t play in the AFL. Hopefully this rule settles down soon. The games I have seen so far have been an obvious knee jerk reaction to criticism from last year.

I reckon from the 20 or so holding the ball decisions paid that I saw in 1 game today, maybe 3 of them were actually holding ball

Players from both sides were obviously frustrated and the umpires were clear in what they have been instructed to do, which is basically interpret a rule differently than it has been interpreted for the last 10 years.

The poor bloke going for the ball has no hope anymore and he’s better off letting his opponent get it and then just tackling them

All this confusion and histeria because they forgot the simplicity of the rule itself.
Last year was diabolical watching the interpretation, obvious holding the ball decisions not being paid at all, now it sounds like the complete opposite.
Grab the footy and have it knocked out your hands and you're gone.
Prior Prior Prior is the key word.

Have watched my fair share of D1-3 trials these past few weeks and reckon the umpires have got it spot on more often than not. Last season was farcical with unpaid decisions. Focus your attention on developing players’ decision making and spend less time complaining about something that we all know needed to be fixed.

I've only watched the one trial and hopefully the umpiring at that trial was not what we get come Saturday. No point going fron farcical unpaid decisions to farcical paid decisions. I'll report back Saturday afternoon.

Beat us by around 7-8 goals, we had 10 regulars out but it was a pretty god quality trial from reports.

Think they just beat Payneham by goal or two.

Played McLaren Vale last week, not sure of score there.
