It's official.... Div 7 will be an 8-team comp.

This is what I've been given.

Adelaide Lutheran

Central United

Flinders University

Greenacres

Houghton Districts

Mawson Lakes

Mitchell Park

St Pauls OS

Both Tea Tree Gully and Golden Grove have elected to field their C and D Grade sides in the C Grade competitions, as is their right given they will now actively participate in Triple Headers as discussed at the March 2018 General Committee Meeting.

As Adelaide Lutheran would normally have faced relegation as per the Rules and Regulations, they have been advised that they will be required to field their teams in the Division 7 and that Division 6 will be a 9 team competition in 2019.

There are a number of options which have been put forward as to how the season should play out.

The challenge has been to consider as many different view-points of all, some of which contradict each other.

For example

- 1 club suggested 17 or 18 rounds are crucial to satisfying potential home match income

- Another suggested 14 rounds before finals is ample given it would be only two less matches of 16 matches if it were a 9 team competition i.e. less umpire payments.

- 1 Club suggested at the completion of Rd 14, the top 4 clubs would play 2 of the bottom 4 teams and 1 from the top 4 however that has hairs on it being

o How does the League choose who plays who and when. i.e. Do we redraw the fixture after each of Rod 14, 15 and 16 ?

o One club replied to this suggestion that its good in theory unless your one of the bottom 4 and scheduled to play the top team in Rd 17 and struggling to fill numbers so why not forfeit.

Clubs were given an the option of the following with the majority expressing a preference for option 2

Option 1.

Play 18 rounds with some teams playing each other twice and some three times with a final 4, 3 week finals series and Grand Final played at Thebarton Oval

Option 2.

· Each team plays each other twice in the first 14 rounds.

· Then the top four will play each other once to finalise the top four positions.

· At the same time the bottom four teams will play each other once for the fifth spot in the finals if mathematically viable ?

This will result in a 17 round season but with a 4 week final series with the Grand Final being held at Thebarton Oval.

Option 3.

An Option not discussed though has been suggested is to introduce an AFL Top 8 type fixture after Rd 14 with the Grand Final played at Thebarton Oval to allow all clubs to get another match before elimination starts.

Discuss.

I like the options, I can see positives in all.

Personally, I'd let them all play each other twice and then geographically work out the last 4 rounds, still go top 5 just incase any club gets the arse end of the deal from that, at least they can still saviour something.

Obviously Mitchell Park would get Flinders Uni and Lutheran, that evens itself out then it's possibly Houghton and Greenies, same deal.

It does weigh differently given the closeness of Mawsons, St. Pauls and Greenies though, I'm sure there's ways around it so no one is severely disadvantaged.

Option 2 it is. Don't mind it - lock it in and let's get on with the season.

Would suck if only a game separated 4th, 5th & 6th though.. potential to completely miss finals despite sitting top 4 after playing each other twice.

If Option 2 goes ahead, how do you decide who gets two home games in Rds 15-17 and who only gets one? Everyone plays a neutral game at Thebby?

It will be randomly generated. And yes, 50% of clubs will end up with one more home game for the season in total.

My Read on it is the top 4 are locked in after Round 14, and only their positions change within the top 4.
The bottom four are then playing off to see if they can make it to 5th. Even if they go 3-0 and 4th goes 0-3, they wont move above 5th:

My take on Option 2 is that the top 4 are guaranteed after Round 14 with just a possible change in order over rounds 15 to 17. So if 4th loses 2 or 3 of its last 3 games to 1, 2 & 3 it can't go lower than 4th even if 5th or 6th win 2 or 3 of their last 3 games and ends up overtaking them. The league will just have to make some manual adjustments to the table to ensure the final positions are consistent with what Rounds 15 to 17 are trying to achieve. It's not as though they aren't used to adjusting points or ladders. This is fair because the two halves of the ladder will still be based on playing each other twice home and away. I just wonder how they will work out who plays home and away in those last 3 games. It could be easy to say it should be based on ladder position after Round 14 but should 1st and 5th get the on and off field advantage of 3 home games. Maybe 1st and 2nd get 2 each and 3rd and 4th 1 each, likewise for 5 to 8.

I think this is a good result for the Div 7 clubs. They still get to play 17 games and the finals bound top 4 will get a good preparation for finals by playing the other top 3 teams in the last 3 rounds and the bottom 4 will be playing for the Wild Card 5th spot. Although the law of averages will likely mean only 2 teams are vying for that 5th spot.

Conceivably 2v3 could end up playing each other in Rd 14, then 1 of 15-17, then the first week of finals, then the third week of finals.

I’ll have a crack:

St Paul’s
Adelaide Lutheran
Houghton Districts
Mawson Lakes
Central United
Mitchell Park
Greenacres
Flinders University

This is based on not much at all to be honest, St Paul’s should be good though

2019 Div7 Ladder Prediction
St Paul's
Adelaide Lutheran
Central United
Mawson Lakes
Houghton
Mitchell Park
Greenachers
Flinders University

St Paul's from last year very strong side in general probably the team to beat in this division
Wouldn't be surprised if Lutheran have another good year in Div7 specially the Reserves side
Central United will improve massively with some of the talent out at mofflin Reserve wouldn't be surprised if top 3 finish in 2019
