Delisted Port midfielder Jack Trengove play amateur football for Prince Alfred Old Collegians next season
Delisted by Port Adelaide at age 28, 2009 No. 2 draft pick Jack Trengove is likely to play in the Adelaide Footy League next year.
Former top draft pick Jack Trengove has conceded his AFL career is over and revealed that he will likely turn his back on the SANFL and return to grassroots football next season.
Melbourne’s number two selection at the 2009 national draft, Trengove was delisted by Port Adelaide last month and has had a host of SANFL clubs clamouring for his services, including his former club Sturt and Woodville-West Torrens, which is to be coached by his close friend and former Double Blues teammate Jade Sheedy.
Trengove, currently holidaying in New Zealand, said he was likely to join some good mates and play for Adelaide Footy League club Prince Alfred Old Collegians, which was runner-up in division one this year.
He is a former PAC student and has started full-time work with Lanyon Asset Management, having completed his commerce degree last year.
“I’ve spoken to a few SANFL clubs and haven't given them a definitive answer yet because there’s still a few things to pan out,’’ Trengove told The Advertiser.
“But potentially I’m going to do something a bit more relaxed and play with a few mates at PAOC.
“The more I think about it the more I’m leaning to concentrating more on work away from footy and playing footy just for a bit of fun with some mates.
“I’m probably at the stage now where I’m wanting to commit more time and effort to work.
“The SANFL these days, in my opinion, is a bigger commitment than the AFL because you have to hold down a full-time job while doing all the training and playing.’’
Trengove, 28, is in high demand in the SANFL after starring in the state league this year, winning the A.R. McLean Medal as the Port Magpies’ best and fairest player and finishing equal-fifth in the Magarey Medal, despite missing five games through injury.
He averaged 31 disposals.
The former Melbourne co-captain’s AFL career was hindered by a serious foot injury, which restricted him to 86 games in eight injury-plagued seasons at the Demons before he was cut and claimed by the Power as a delisted free agent at the end of 2017.
His three AFL games at Port were in rounds 15, 16 and 18 last year.
Trengove was drafted from PAC after moving to Adelaide from Naracoorte.
“Before coming back to Adelaide (two years ago) I assumed I was going to be in Melbourne for most of the rest of my life and now I’m here I’m thinking I might as well make the most of the opportunity and play with some mates that I haven’t played with since school,’’ he said.
A popular person and teammate, Trengove said he looks back on his AFL career fondly, despite never being able to reach the heights expected of a number two pick because of a bad injury run.
“I’ve spent a decade in the industry, met great people and certainly learnt a lot about myself throughout it,’’ he said.
“Footy clubs are all about the people you meet and the friends you make and that’s probably the greatest thing that I’ve had out of my career.
“You go through the ups and downs but it’s all part of it and at the end of the day I look at it as though I am one of the lucky ones that got to live out a childhood dream.
“Not many people get that opportunity, so I am grateful more than anything.’’

Adding in Athelstone and Unley as short road-trips is also welcome!
