There are a few prominent clubs - drop the name of the person in question and someone might be able to answer it for ya

Hi Footy World,

Crazy times at the moment. Just out of interest what are club’s thinking with returning to training next week? We are looking into training in 10-15 again. I know there will be plenty of opinions. The league surely has to come out with a training protocol? It will be right in the middle of the “peak” in cases. I am guessing we will all be close contacts if someone has Covid at training.

You simply boot the unvaccinated from your club and at this time of the year its all fitness stuff which can be done under each players own volition.

Why should the league be expected to produce a training protocol? Any club worth a pinch of salt should be able to manage their training schedule and contingencies, and understand the risk matrix.

The arsehole in me hopes the season is interrupted by covid and a few clubs are relegated due to circumstances (or cost a finals position).. might actually make some of the narrow sighted, self indulgent people at clubs sit up and realise they need to look long term/bigger picture than just their precious 18 round season.

Vaccinated or not teams are going to lose a shit load of players and it seems inevitable lower division forfeits are going to be happening.

Will the league consider some form of 'loan' system. Posting in another thread if its good enough for the BBL to lend players, good enough for the EPL to have an actual loaning system would the SAAFL consider a system that allows a club with enough players to lend their players out.

Immediate thoughts would be that it would have to be for the lowest grade at a club only.
Could you nominate a club that you have a 'relationship' with to which you could swap players?
Could there be a pool of players who just want a game of footy that could go out and play for different teams each week? Would any players be interested??

Going to be an interesting season especially if this whole close contact isolation rules still exist by footy season.

League might allow loaning - clubs and players less likely to be interested.

Yeah that's going to be the challenging part isn't it. Shouldn't be a problem at the northern burbs clubs, they pretty much have played at them all anyway and will most likely be there the next year.

I guess its needs to be look at from the light of the EPL. Obviously the club lending the player needs to have a very strong reason for allowing it to happen. Would it be a promising kid who isn't getting the game time they need and will benefit. Is it the bloke who is getting played out of position or wants to try a new position? Is there a way you can rewards club who loan a player(s), they gain a recruiting point for the next season.

The next hurdle is why would a player want to be loaned...………..that's probably the biggest stumbling block. Could they have a reduction in their player fees subsidised by the SAAFL. Surely the SAAFL have an interest in more games going ahead.

I honestly don't have the answers but think under the current rules most sporting comps are going to be a dogs breakfast. We can barely keep our workplaces going at the moment. Just throwing it out there as a somewhat interesting topic.

Could the league look at if a game is going to be effected by Covid, to reduce the on field numbers to 16 a side so a game can get played?

If a game is going to be affected and both sides can field 16, then why wouldn't they come to that agreement themselves?

Although if you have enough for 16 a side you're probably not really struggling due to covid.

What's the minimum needed? 14?

Laws of footy state 14 is the minimum required for a game of footy, and officially a game can only be forfeited if you cant get 14 on the field. The By-laws of leagues state what the processes is for evening up (juniors) and what penalties their are for forfeiting games in particular A grade.

If only there was some kind off fix that was available that would maintain the integrity of an individual competition, something like an 8 team comp to enable some flexibility with fixturing when necessary.

By far the best solution to these problems, but the near sighted voted it down.

The concept of a loan system of mandating games played with less than 18 is mad. I suspect we'll see a lot of C Grade (and even B Grade) forfeits and some outlandish A Grade results by reasons of Covid.

Genuine question, why would loaning players be considered so mad

I mean it’s a standard occurance in the biggest professional sport in the world, we’ve seen other sports resort to it to get a comp going, why would it be so crazy for the saafl to have a system

Also my suggestion was aimed at c grade level to ensure games go ahead, would it be that bad a thing if teams loaned a few blokes so the other 30 blokes over the 2 teams get a game of footy on the weekend in turn spending money over your clubs bar, in turn not having players not having 5 forfeits in a year and wanting rego money back, losing interest etc etc

I’m not saying it’s the answer but surely players, the league and the clubs want as many games to go ahead as possible limiting forfeits.

We allow it in country cricket up here through the harvest period and we all appreciate it means we get more games.

South Australian Rugby Union have a loan system in place as well with a heap of t&c’s around it. I played 5 years and never realised noticed it affect the comp in anyway that took the enjoyment of playing away.

Loaning players carries so many risks, especially if players start getting sent off, reported, undisciplined ect. Clubs have been given logical options already so why would we now go down this path?

Personally I’d be shocked if the season kicks off on time full stop with so much uncertainty. Everywhere in the World over the last 2 years where Covid runs free shows that it picks up pace as Autumn begins going in to Winter so taking out political crap what makes us all think we’re going to be any different? Still a lot of water to go under bridges yet….
