Northern Suburbs Football League (SA)

Purely for discussion - with clubs in the North facing similar issues, is it time to go back to the days of the CDFA/NMFL and follow the lead of the Southern FL in southern Adelaide?

Clubs facing similar resourced, local rivals with less travel and the ability for junior sides to stay local may assist football in a heartland area of SA that struggles in recent years. SANFL and local Councils can assist with the inevitable culture issues that emerge with local clashes week in, week out!

Again, food for thought!

Brahma Lodge
Central United
Eastern Park
Elizabeth
Ingle Farm
Mawson Lakes
Para Districts (North Pines / Parafield / Paralowie)
Para Hills
Salisbury
Salisbury West (re-formed)
Trinity Old Scholars
Northern Panthers (Smithfield / Munno Para)

It's very apparent right now that there isn't enough players to go around the clubs that are left in the North now, without resurrecting extinct ones

3 or 4 of the clubs on that list struggle to hold 2 teams together as it is

there's only 2 pros to resurrecting any kind of northern league

1) less travel for those that live beyond GJ Road. and

2) We can get rid of the Tossers  ;)

Keep in mind that parts of the Northern Suburbs are the fasted growing areas in SA/all of Australia - these include people that will play at a club that can show a way forward, have a good culture and foster juniors to flow through the pathways.

Imagine a Smithfield/Munno Para/Andrews Farm club rebranded to lose some baggage, integrating the massive African population into their sides - these guys are athletic marvels, but would only work with a lot of of commitment and some SANFL resourcing

What would happen to the C grade comp? Only 5 clubs can field more than 2 sides in that mix and one of them forfeited yesterday…

I think you would find some people would come out of the woodwork if they knew they were going to compete on a somewhat level playing field. Good luck to Elizabeth recruiting anyone at the current time.

That’s the exact attitude that’s causing a lot of these problems now.

That is funny, Smithfield is the oldest club out of any of them listed.

It's not the lack of players to go round, it's when clubs make poor decisions they struggle.

Quite aware - the areas around Smithfield are exploding (Andrew’s Farm, Blakeview, etc.) but ‘Smithfield FC’ carries baggage whether anyone likes it or not!

“Northern Panthers” or similar wouldn’t be the worst move in the world, along with strategy and resources to go along with it.

Older than Salisbury, Est. 1880?

A league can't be run by the clubs, so you need some good footy people to remove themselves from club affiliation to run the league. Vote 1 for Bedge as President of the Northern Football League!

Not at all Bedge. Nothing against IH for putting up the discussion but just reminding people that any breakaway is not that simple and it doesn't even get to 1st base without the creation of a league board/committee. Not to mention getting signed off by SANFL Community Football which is probably an even bigger hurdle. Maybe D6 and D7 being combined to form a D6 and D6 North is a more credible concept. And before anyone goes on about how relegation and promotion would work in and out of D5 - the AdFL generally makes sensible and logical decisions in that space so I'm sure that can be worked through.

I think in coming years we will see shift anyway - some clubs on the outskirts may try and head to neighboring leagues, some clubs may end up closing the doors, and as a whole the competition may be reduced to 6 divisions.

As a non-Northerner, besides the BLG league, what other leagues are out that way? Would a D6 or D7 be able to compete in the BLG?

Adel Plains or possibly Hills?

Nah, not sure a D6 or D7 club could compete in any of those leagues.

To be fair, Angle Vale were div7 when they moved to Adel Plains in 2016, I know it's been awhile but they're very competitive now [emoji2369]

Ingle Farm would cruise through the Adelaide plains league and win back to back to back flags in their first 3 years! Without doubt their list right now is superior to any other team in that comp

True, but look at the growth in that area in recent years - and accessible easily from the expressway. Not many other clubs will be able to achieve that level of growth in their suburb.

AV did benefit from the Smthfield hiatus a decade ago, then built a very strong junior program off the population growth and lack of close competition for juniors.

Obviously kudo's to AV on where they're at now, but they are the exception, I'd struggle to see another club moving and having the same success.

True, but for now we will just have to be content with beating you for bark to bark flags. 8)
