Just went on to the SAAFL website and had a look at the tribunal outcome from last night. Appears an under 18 player from Smithfield has been suspended for 6 seasons!! The charge was striking an umpire. Just curious to find out if anyone knows what happened?? Checked on a few other threads but couldn't find any info. Apologise if it's already been discussed.

Smithfield as a club have not had much luck on their trips to SAAFL house this season. Looking back a few weeks one A grader got 16 games for headbutting

Being in the U/18's on sunday, i don't have any 100% information on what happened. All I heard was that the umpire threw a punch at the player and missed and the player hit him back. Don't know if this is totally true or what provoked the umpire to throw a punch if he indeed did.

No, we havent had a good run at the tribunal this season, but these blokes probably deserve what they get so, in the long run, it is good for the club cause we don't need guys playing for us who do these sort of things.

Still....6 seasons is a fair suspension, effectively 100 games.

A lot can happen between 17 and 23 playing football, almost feel sorry for the bloke.

shit that is a lot of football to miss out on
you would think the player would play in another league under another name or something!!!!!
better for the club in the long run
maybe saafl did it to send a message to the players at smithfield and other clubs like it????

The SAAFL would want to be pretty sure about what happened when dishing out a 6 season penalty. Something like that can ruin a bloke, as well as denting the reputation of a club.

If the guy was a nutcase though the league might have done everyone a favour.

Really keen on hearing from anyone who knows first-hand what happened.

Shouldnt laugh but if that is true what could the player have possibly done to provoke that sort of reaction from the umpire?

If what this kid did warrants 6 seasons then the umpire must still be in ICU @ the RAH...

Which I strongly doubt; no problem with SAAFL handing down a hefty suspension as that stuff should not be tolerated at any level but please lets have a realisitic sanction using commonsense. My suggestion a 10 week ban with a further 10 week suspended sentence. Another case of the SAAFL making a huge stuff up! But none of us are surprised...

i still don't have 100% facts yet, but one report is like i said, the umpire threw a punch at him, the actual umpires report says the player came angrily at the umpire after the game and the umpire put his hands up the protect himself, and our player hit him. obviously the umpires own report will be what the SAAFL goes on, and that might be exactly what happened. I wasnt there so i don't know.

One other thing i heard was the second umpire said to someone after the game (ironically the second umpire was someone that got hit by a player from smithfield himself about 10 years ago, with the player getting suspended for 7 years) that the player would have been better getting hit by the umpire cause he would have had some sort of evidence they the umpire threw a punch. Like i said though, that could just be hearsay and i really have no idea.

Didnt take long for the advertiser to find out though, they rang my sister this morning who is our club delegate looking for details cause the SAAFL wouldnt give them any and they also asked for our players phone number.

spot on with that one jayne, 10 weeks is fair!!
similar case a year or two ago in sanfl u17's
player fly kicked umpire
recieved 20 games
was given 3 less for pleading guilty, 5 game good behaviour
leaving him with 12 games suspension, another positive with suspended sentencing is that the bloke cant get in trouble for 2 years or recieves more games!!!!
saafl must look at a different system cause theres dont work!!

no way jayne - if the kid hit an umpire the penalty should be at least two seasons. the umpire has to be protected - as much as we've all wanted to have a piece of one.
if the umpire provoked by taking a swing then this should be taken into account (eg then 10 weeks with suspended sentence + the umpire being suspended for the same period) when sentencing but do you want players retaliating to being hit to the detriment of the side/club (remembering the sending off rule etc) during a game? remember this could be during a final when one player can make a world of difference.
a statement has to be made especially when the league stuggles to get umpires at the moment.

I'd say it did take them a bit longer than you suggest - your sister only got the call this morning....

They probably found out about it on here.

A guy playing in the river murray league was suspended for a total of 90 games for intimadating the umpire. all he did was run towards him then dodge him!! same umpire reported this guy over 5 times the previous season.

[quote="Falcon Chick"]This suspension has been unfairly clocked against Smithfield IMO, yes fair enough he was playing in a Smithfield jumper on the day, but I have it on VERY good authority that the kid in question was cleared from Eastern Park only 2 days before hand....

He originally only got 5 seasons, but laughed when the commissioner told him, so they threw an extra year on...

This is correct FC, apparently he was also very smug during the whole hearing and found it all quite funny. No Smithfield official was there with him, he was there by himself with a friend.
