Trescothick out of Ashes

Cricinfo staff

November 14, 2006

Marcus Trescothick, England's opening batsman, has flown home from Australia with a recurrence of his "stress-related illness" and will play no part in the Ashes.

Trescothick left from Sydney International Airport early on Tuesday morning, having missed the Champions Trophy in India and made just 8 in England's warm-up match against New South Wales

"It is disappointing to lose a player of such quality from the England dressing-room," said an ECB spokesman. "We hope he makes a full recovery and is able to resume his international career."

Not a good start for the poms and the odds in our favour even more now looks like it could turn into Dads Army vs the Walking Wounded

Trescothick's average in Australia is 27. England's odds firming. Cook will open in my view.

Agree. Not really a subject to make a joke about. A good thing Trescothick and England have decided to rectify the problem before it had any more of a chance to damage the player in question or the team.

England send for Ed Joyce

Cricinfo staff

November 15, 2006

England have summoned Ed Joyce, Middlesex's middle-order batsman, to replace Marcus Trescothick who returned home yesterday.

Joyce, who has made three ODI and one Twenty20 appearances for England, but has yet to appear in a Test, was preferred to Rob Key and Owais Shah.

"As we already have other players in the squad who have experience of opening the innings we have decided to choose a replacement who will be able to cover a number of different positions within the order," England's chairman of selectors David Graveney said. "Ed is a highly promising player who has performed well for Middlesex this season and I am sure he will be delighted to be part of an Ashes squad."

Joyce, 28, had been picked in England's Academy squad, who will train in Australia during the Ashes.

I'll think you'll find the POMs have structured their academy squad this year as cover for their main ASHES squad, basically the 16 next best players in England are in the Academy squad and will be absed in Perth (I think) for the summer.

people seem to think he had a pretty good 2005 Ashes series

Trescothick was his side's second-leading scorer in the 2005 Ashes win - scoring 431 runs at 43.10.

And along with Strauss, he scores his runs quickly which has been one of the main differences between the England of old and the new England.

Will be interesting to see if the likes of Cook, Bell and Collingwood can score enough runs to help England retain the Ashes. With Vaughan and Trescothick out, there's a little too much pressure on Strauss, Pieterson and Flintoff. And no England batsman has played an Ashes Test in Australia before.
