Haydens Replacement.

Postby stan » Tue Jan 13, 2009 1:13 pm

Well after the great man has now decleared his innings closed we can probably start the discussion about a replacement for his test spot.
So have a look at the pole as well. I would say if Phill Jacques returns to form after his injury then you would look at him first. Also in the mix would be Rogers, Klinger and Phill Hughes.
If anyone has any other options that we should consider let me know and ill add them.

Klinger for mine, left/right opening combination, the man is on fire atm, I doubt whether it will happen though, wrong state and not on a CA contract.

klinger has been in good form wearing the creams this year. but as previous form shows, correct me if i am wrong but the australian test team have not had a South Australian batsman since boof and blewett and even elliott but he wasnt even South Australian when picked. but the end result will more than likely be hughes from NSW.

Jaques will get the first crack at it if fit. If he's not Hughes will play.

The side for the first Test will most likely look like this:

1. Katich
2. Jaques
3. Ponting
4. Hussey
5. Clarke
6. Symonds
7. Haddin
8. Johnson
9. Hauritz
10. Siddle
11. Clark

12th Bollinger.

Jaques should get first crack as IMO he would have been first choice if he wasn't injured. If he doesn't make it then the door is wide open..................for a baggy blue to take the vacant spot ;)

Has to be Jaques as first choice - he averages 54 in both first class and test cricket. That's higher than Hughes

If Jaques isn't fit then I'm still not sure they would rush in Phil Hughes. So that seems to only leave Chris Rogers.

HOWEVER ... I wonder with Hussey's form slump whether they might, in fact, look at switching him to open and using a D Hussey or a Hodge at at 5, with Clarke moving to 4 (Clarke's a bit wasted at 5 these days IMO). I have been against this move until now because the Huss has been so stable at 4. But now I wonder if all bets are off ....

M Hussey
Katich
Ponting
Clarke
D Hussey or Hodge ..... seems like a pretty strong line up to me (if Jaques is injured, otherwise see Rod-Rooster's team)

Jaques deserves first go at the job but if he is unfit for the tour then i hope they give it to young Hughes.

Jacques hasn't played for 3 maybe 4 months. I think he only played grade cricket for the first time on the weekend. How can you pick a guy with no form on the board?

Hughes for my liking. Time to pick a guy who is going to be top of the order for 10-15 years.

Jacques will go to South Africa and will do enough to lock down a spot for the Ashes.

it depends how Taity goes in the last twenty20 and the 5 onedayers, he has put his hand up to play test cricket again!!! and if he has a good series against the South Africans, the selectors will almost have to take him, we need to take wickets

I treated the poll as who is the next longer term opener, not necessarially just the next test. That's why I was putting a temporary solution out there in case Jaques needs more time.

I can't see why you'd abandon a 30 year old opener, proven at test level with an average of 54, in favour of a 20 year old who may not be ready.

I would see Hughes coming in to partner Jaques, eventually replacing Katich who would either disappear of move back down the order.

coverking Shaun Tait is a lot closer to going South Africa than you think, Bobby Simpson is a huge fan of Tait, i bet you that Andrew Hilditch speaks to Simpson about Selections,Hilditch is also a big fan of Sloon. and if he has a good series against there Batsman. well he will earn his own ticket. he will have to be used in small bursts though
