Fair choke
They were going along nicely and only needed 25 to win with 3 wickets in hand and Handscomb in the 90’s

Why are batters only averaging 40 at best for their FC averages

Alot of the drop in averages in recent times (since 2020/2021) in Shield cricket (and test cricket) is because of the combination of the pitches like you mentioned (drop in pitches/pitches more favourable towards bowlers with more grass being left on them and therefore not as flat) and mainly the reconditioned Kookaburra Ball with the reinforced seam and extra lacquer. It's had a significant impact on batting in Australia.

You could also argue the fast bowlers are better, there’s been a large group of very good fast/fast medium bowlers in Shield cricket for awhile now and perhaps with more of a focus on white-ball cricket now and faster scoring that also may of have an impact on the lower FC averages.

Greater professionalism from the bowlers and the fielding team maybe? Greater intel on each batters weakness. Knowing where to bowl and where to set fields etc.

The scores are growing in One Day and T20 Cricket, with field and bowling restrictions, but Test cricket appears as challenging as ever for the batters.

You both make valid points, experts spend countless hours looking for batsmen's flaws thanks to all of the footage at their disposal nowadays.

We do seem to have an endless plethora of bowlers at our disposal, we could lose our top 3 pacemen and still have adequate coverage, I'm not sold on the spin department though, you could see how much losing Lyon cost us over in England.

I think in general the pitches are being made to have a bit of juice in them to ensure there is a result, years ago there were results because 9,10 & Jack were all genuine bunnies.

Well they're my 6:30am theories, they could differ to my noon ones and I'll probably be wrong with both sets.
