Yep.

Are we better off picking another batsman at 6?
Does Marsh's value as a bowler trump this?

I think in our current state a batting all-rounder is the preferred choice. However, if Nevill can develop himself into a very solid wicket keeper/batsman then we could have the luxury of picking an extra bowling option perhaps.

Personally I would prefer Nevill bat at 7 because the 6 above him are performing.

With hazelwood bird and Siddle he probably isn't required that much as those lads can bowl a lot of overs. When Starc and Pattinson come back in reckon marsh becomes a lot more important

Long term he can't perform this way with the bat and stay in the side IMHO. We need someone who averages minimum 40 batting at 6. If somehow we had a genuine keeper doing that, he could bat 7. Would still be below par, but not so far we couldn't afford it. But no keeper I know of is close to that (or not really a keeper) and he wouldn't command a spot as a front line bowler to bat 8. No doubt it's handy to have a strong bowling option, but 4 main bowlers shouldn't need that much support. An attack of Starc, Pattinson/Cummins, Hazlewood and Lyon should manage 90 overs between them in a day and I think that would be the most aggressive line up we could muster.

Personally, I don't think he's got the ability with the bat. Will be a valuable all rounder in the short forms, but I think he'll get dropped before long from the test side and won't produce enough at shield level to force a return. For now, he's being hidden with Warner, Khawaja, Smith and Voges dominating and Joe Burns doing a good job. But Voges probably has 12 months left, Smith already showing signs that his form is wavering and Khawaja won't be neglecting the inner and outer portions of his blade forever.

Pitch has lots its green edge now. Flat as all crap.

Voges....made the most of his second life. Was an absolute shocker of a call that has had a major impact on the game.

Yes. Australia finally get the third NZ wicket. Latham gone, good innings but a dissapointing dismissal. 3/157, trial by 222.

not too many number 6s in world cricket that average 40

Flat decks
Lots of cricket played
All rounders are probably needed more in cricket than ever before
If the number 6 averages mid thirties with the bat , that should be deemed a pass mark
The 5th bowling all rounder also gives the front line bowler less of a work load

The allrounder also is an insurance policy if a front line bowler is injured
This test is an example with Peter Siddle who is unlikely to bowl again in this test with a back injury

Imagine now if Marsh was not selected
An attack of Hazelwood, Bird and Lyon left as bowlers

Marsh has a batting average of 24 which is well below par
However his bowling average of 31 on plenty of flat decks is quite good
