No doubt about it Panther
AU may well need a Dreayvid type in the future
However the recent past and just at the minute suggests we dont need it

Im more concerned about the bowling attack away from home
LEE will tire
CLARK cant keep up his 20 average forever
JOHNNO/TAITY/HOGGY all ?
MACGILL has carpel tunnel is a mid age crisis looming

BUT this test has also shown is without HAYDEN we are not as intimidating

To state the extremely obvious - today is a big day for Australia.

If they don't get India out very quickly today you would think Australia will be breaking not one, but two records if they are to win this match...

Should be an enthralling day 8)

Ponting is the only batsman in the top six who has anywhere near the experience of Dravid. This test team is the least experienced Australia have put on the park since the 80's. Thank goodness the Indian board decided not to come to Australia a little earlier and get some more match practice under Australian conditions. They gifted us that first Test with that decision.

The tennis idiots on Sunrise this morning where talking about how India has gotten 'inside our heads' and the mental side of the game and others have pointed at the selectors misreading the nature of the track. It is our inexperience that has been most telling in this test.

No this test has shown without Hayden, Langer, Martyn, Warne and McGrath we are not as intimidating. Hayden's injury was just the straw that 'broke the camel's back' so to speak. Not only are we missing his runs but his slips catching as well.

We will be vulnerable for a few years, but we're still a darn good side. But don't forget that India is a very experienced side with some truly heavy weight batsmen that inexperienced bowlers are going to struggle to dismiss on good batting wickets.

School's in for many of the current eleven. As long as most of the make it then we'll be fine. Even if most of them fail there aren't too many middle orders going around as good as India's. New Zealand for example have lost as many experienced players as we have but didn't have the talent to begin with.

It's absolutely crucial the Australian selectors / team work out very quickly who is going to be our first slipper for the next 6-8 years. Clarke is young enough but he needs to get in the slips full time at 1-2, to get adjusted to this part of the ground.
With Hayden soon to go in the next year or so, we need a person in this most vital slot.
After G Chappell went and before M Taylor arrived (84-88 period), we had a revolving door in there as AB never liked being at first, and we suffered badly. As a side at the time that didn't create massive numbers of chances, we hurt ourselves further by dropping catches.
Now, with some great bowlers just gone and the attack likely not to create as many chances as previous years (lee apart), someone has to step up for that spot. If not Clarke, who??

jaques would be someone who may be an option- hes a bit slow over the turf and seems to have good hands which would lend itself to first slip. You cant force people to do it though- some can and some cant/dont want to

Agreed he can be an option. We just have to work out who the man is, get him in there and back him to do the work and be good enough when the nicks come. when you think back to a cordon of Healy, Taylor, M Waugh, S Warne and Waugh in the gully, that really was being utterly spoiled. That cordon and Marsh, Chappell, Chappell, Walters and Mallett and some others in our past like Grout, Simpson etc are the reasons you get extra victories, simply because nothing goes down.

Does not have great hands.

Has dropped a lot of catches at state level. Would not be my choice.

Yep. I agree Pup. Not Jaques, although his fielding was good in the first innings of this match so he is working on it.

Pathan doing a great job as nightwatchman. We've still got to get Gangully, Laxman, Dhoni and Kumble out yet. 350 plus makes them safe with our green top order and out of form skipper. We need two or three in a hurry to really be in this match.

I've never seen a Test batsmen so keen to throw away his wicket, like Gangirly has this Test...

If the Aussies can restrict the lead to under 350, we should be able to get that. Under 300 would be perfect.
