Just further to my original post end of day three.......only 11 wickets and over 850+ runs, that pitch is a joke.......to give the side that wins the toss such a distinct advantage on such a flat track....is just not cricket...............

What a day!
I watched the first few overs, went to thebby college to do my final test, passed that and quickly checked the baggy green site. 3 down.
Rush home and turn the tele on and its 5 down!
Its been pale ale and great cricket all arvo for me.

Good decision to bring Hussey in. He is a great player in great form and he runs well between the wicket, as does Ponting.

Wonderful late cut just then by the skipper.

if we win it will be one of our greatest test wins considering our comeback (first innings and today) and the stakes of this test series are high.

Yeah bounce back with a draw  Great attacking mindset. Just what is required i guess. This test is not over yet by the way

Besides to win a test you would have to take 20 wickets. How the hell are you going to do that? I could throw a dart into the Barmy Army and i'm sure i'd hit someone more capable of taking wickets that Ashley Giles.

Guess i was right. Looks like playing defensive cricket for a draw has backfired on England.

Surely Clarke and Gilchrist should've come in before Martyn?

What a terrible shot from Martyn. WTF was he thinking?? Absolutely unnecessary and just puts enourmous pressure on Hussey and the other left.

How awesome was that? The players reactions afterwards said it all. What a win. Warne actually rated that as the best win he's been involved in in 142 tests. Ponting said the same. What a great win. How good is Mike Hussey?

Hoggard and Flintoff carried there attack in this test match. Giles doesnt do enough. Anderson hasent done much either. Seems a bit one paced. Just my thoughts.

Bloody good game. Australia really are a different team with Hussey at 5.

What Warnie actually said it was the best Test he had played in out of his 142 Tests. He was right, this Test was fantastic right from Day 1. Everyone whinged about how boring the Poms batted, how bad the wicket was, etc. Facts are, what we saw for the first 4 days was bat dominating ball on a good TEST wicket.

Then out came the greatest spinner (possibly bowler?) of all time and won a Test match in sensational circumstances. Of course, ALL bowlers did their part .. even Brett Lee who some people on this forum don't rate all that highly. Silly, very silly.

I loved the match, it was everything Test Cricket can be. One point ... was Martyn batting under instructions? I have a feeling he may have been. Go out there and force the pace, and if you fail Hussey and Clarke can mop up. If so, he may be retained for the Perth Test match.

To those calling for apologies from Les Burdett, maybe apologies of your own may be forthcoming. Don't ever question the best curator in the World.

And in closing, somebody thinks Ashley Giles is a Test bowler. It isn't me.

It was the biggest thrill Ive had in sport since Norwood beat North
Adelaide at prospect this year.

Flintoff provided us with some strange bowling changes.
Hoggard was underbowled
Giles over bowled.
Too many easy singles at square leg in the chase.

Spare a thought for Paul Collingwood 206 + not out in a defiant 2nd idig

Sir Ricky Ponting + Sir Micky Hussey got us over the line chasing a low total.
Low 2nd innings totals have plagued previous Australian sides who CHOKED.

Some glaring 2nd test agenda

Giles dropping the Ponting catch
Giles inability on a 5th day turning pitch
Giles being reversed swept by Hussey twice on a 5th day pitch.
Martyn twice out in the gully the 2nd innings was a shocker
Anderson now has 2 for 300+ for the series
Harmison has gone missing.
Pieterson getting a new sponsor 7 up.

Mahmood + Panesar surely for Giles and Anderson for the 3rd test
When we all see how Mahmood bowls we will be asking why Anderson played the 1st 2 tests.

Sadly Martyn for Watson.
Martyn will finished a distiguished career with a 46 average, has served Australia
with fine middle order strokemaking but at 35 years old has run his race.
Age has caught up too him not sheer ability, it will be sad too see him go.
Spare a thought during the emphatic 10 minutes that follwed after Husseys cover driiven
victory stroke, every Australian player would have been ecstatic, but spare a thought
for Damien who must be caught in the emotion of victory and failure.
Martyn is one of the sweetest timers of a cricket ball, effortless pushes that would glide
to the picketts.
Memories eternal.

I think his changes of pace aren't too bad, but where he struggles is with length. He's all over the place, and fast medium pace that is fatal at Test Level. Sometimes a Test bowler can get away with ordinary line if his length is spot on, but never the other way around.

I said it after the Brisbane Test. If Mahmood and Panesar aren't better bowlers than Anderson and Giles, they have no place in the English squad. Let's hope they both get a cap in Perth.

AH

The pitch was a shocker
4 days of paradise
1 day of disintigration
The poms only got close because they batted first.

IF is a big word
But If Giles caught Ponting at 4/74 and Australia was chasing 400 on a 5th day
pitch and probably would have lost, you would say the pitch was unfair to the
side batting first and the other side batting last.

As for Lee he was presented a situation today after Clark and Warne squeezed
the English batsmen early.
Lee 1/139 + 2/35[2 wickets on the 5th day worn out pitch] was still below par.
Worthy of a spot in this team YES
Worthy of accolades NO
If this side was not winning all the time his form would show up.
Lee's biggest test and I am sure he will still under achieve is when Mcgrath
and Warnnnnnnnnnnnnnnney retire.
Warnnnnnnnnney made the quick bowlers tasks simple today.

England were playing for a draw in the end, and probably could have batted to near 800 and made it a certainty in the 1st innings, Perth is going to be really tough, and was the one most English marked down as the hardest to win, but as today proved anything can happen.
