After playing cricket against Australia in the last 60 years those birdbrain Indian
selectors have finally worked out you dont need 2 spinners in this country
3 quicks and bingo

Rogers will never be a long term successful test cricketer
He has no shots for this level

Reckon our boys are still a real chance of pulling this one off, wicketless session at the start tomorrow will have the Indians going into doubt mode

Katich doesn't have the technique to open at test level IMO.

gadj1976 wrote:Rogers - will be ok but looks a bit suspect to a swinging ball early

You say the same about Rogers. Katich in better form and already has experience in Test cricket. The best option for a one off Test.

1. Katich has had his day in the sun and the selectors know what he can and can't do.
2. Rogers will be a better long term prospect if we were able to stick with him - younger, genuine opener.

I would've picked a newbie in this test, personally. Putting Katich in there for one test, batting out of position would've done no one any good. At least they get to have a look at Rogers batting in position and can make an assessment. If Katich did or didn't make runs, it would've made absolutely no difference to our long term prospects.

Yep, Rogers may faults but he's a better longer term prospect than Katich.

Hayden is retiring "soon" so to be able to look at a bloke at the top of the order against a good attack is ideal IMO.

Katich will never open for Australia.

He already has in quite a few ODIs.

Katich is 32 while Rogers is 30. Hardly a massive difference considering the age players can play to these days.

The long term opening replacement for Hayden i think is a major issue. No real quality openers in state ranks in their early to mid 20's who look to be an obvious replacment.

2 Years ago i thought Tim Paine as a 20 year old looked a brilliant prospect but he has slipped back to the pack a bit as well. I still think if he improves and develops for say 2 years he may still be a shot.

C'mon Pup..........technical pick up............(yawn).

Ok, let me qualify - Katich will never open for Australia IN TEST MATCHES. Sorry I had to be more specific seeing as we were speaking about test matches. Geez guys, come on.

It's not a massive difference in age, but Rogers IS an opener, Katich IS NOT. I would've thought that was the major difference.

If Katich was starring as an opener in one dayers, he wouldn't have been replaced.

Note to self : Why am I having this conversation again?

M.Hayden, J.Langer early in their careers were ordinary (Consistancy wise) at international cricket. When they became more mature they were given another go. Remember watching sheild cricket on 9 and seeing all these blokes in the mid 90's like Langer,Hayden,Law,Blewett,Lehmann,Maher,Gilchrist,Ponting,Love and even blokes that never played a test like Siddons,Barsby,Cox and so on. We knew we were going to dominate world cricket for the next 10-15 years. 4 years ago I woulda said we were shot in 7-8 years but now there is some talent coming through.Even though there is no outstanding talent coming through at the top of the order there will still be plenty of talent in the middle order and in the bowling ranks to keep Australia in at least the top 2 of world cricket over the next 10 years.

A bit premature to be dissing Rogers in his FIRST test FFS. As long as he doesn't end up a successor to (Victorian) Wayne Phillips who disappeared without a trace after a similiar moderate effort at the same venue.

What was far more worrying for me was Jaques against the short ball outside off stump. VERY dissapointing. Not sure what to leave, flashing at wide balls..all with less than five overs to go to stumps. Ridiculous batting. History suggests we'll struggle and go down AND win another amazing victory almost at the same time. For the first time I almost pity the bookies.

A great day's cricket coming up. Forget about posting the baggings boys, just enjoy the day. It looks like it's going to be a good one. Good on you India for bringing back the contest.

Because we are 2/64 and Katich is averaging over a hundred in Pura Cup Cricket this season. Katich has a great technique that would be suited to opening and if you're good enough your young enough. I agree with you on one thing though, they won't select the Kat to open.
