First Class Cricket Talk (International and State)

Probably a bit short-sighted here pafc1870. Mahmood was widely regared as one of the world's best finger spinners earlier in the year (even by the England coach), and deserved a spot ahead of Giles. I don't think you should place too much emphasis on what he did in a mickey-mouse game that counted for naught...

I humbly apologise... But, for the record, still say I would pick both Mahmood and Panesar before Giles...

And why not get Phil Tuffnell away from the channel 9 commentary team
and offer him a spot before ASHLEY PILES of runs.

We had to put up with Puffnell's complacent smirk for four days..where was the tosser when the Poms went down faster than Paris Hilton? Now THAT would have been quality TV, he probably still hasn't come out from under that rock.

Agreed RR, couldn't believe it myself when I read the same thing in The Age

Fletch: 'Now Geriant, the keeping spot, whadaya reckon, you or Ready........"
Jonesy: "Ahhhh......."

I also like the bit when Fletcher says, "its not just me you know the captain picks the teams too....."

I'd love to have Fletcher standing beside me in the trenches.....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

IMHO Fletcher has been our "Man of the Series" so far.....

I haven't such "spin" (excuse the pun), since Tariq Aziz the old Iraqi forign Affairs minsiter talking up Iraq's performance in the "first phase" of the Iraq war in 2003

Seriously Read is 500 times the gloveman Jones is and Jones ain't that good with the bat. Giles is a pie chucker and i can't think of a state side in Australia that he'd make. They must be doing more than just sweet talking Fletch

Jones isn't much chop that's true, but how can everyone come on here and rave about Read? I'm a FOX viewer and I watch Test cricket with matches not involving Australia, including a lot of the Pakistan vs. England series as well as the Champions Trophy. Despite watching so much cricket, I don't think I've seen enough of Read's keeping to pump him up the way some have on here. Panesar is the player who made the greater impression on me watching England last winter.

I've seen Read enough to know he is a better gloveman than Jones (a lot better). Remember REB, people aren't necessarily talking him up as such rather making the point that Jones is that bad that Read in comparison is a lot better.

What he said REB,

Read ain't the be all and end all of glovemen, but he certainly better than Jones and watching the Paki's v POMs this year his footwork and glovework were much crisper than Jones'. Despite my constant bagging of Jones he has improved from 2005 but he hasn't improved that much to classsified as a test class gloveman.

FWIW and to be fair to both Jones and Read, Gilchrist ain't that great as a gloveman either, however he does stay lower than Jones and he leg side takes off Warne have improved immeasurably snce he first started. At the Australian sessions I watched in Darwin for two years Gilchrist was always first on the track working at his keeping (his soft hands and taking of the ball) and last off too.....

However his howler of a bye on day 5 to ball off Mcgrath that died was basic stuff that shouldn't happen at D grade district level let alone a test level that demonstrates that in the pantheon of Australian 'Keepers Carter, Oldfield, Tallon, Langley, Grout, Marsh and Healy Gilchrist is nowhere near as good as them.

Completetly agree though Gilchrist has more than covered his shortcomings with the gloves with his bat.

GILCHRIST best keeper batsman in Australian history.
GILCHRIST not the best wicketkeeper in Australian history.
GILCHRIST great personality
GILCHRIST = champ.

At times he lives up to his last 6 letters in his name.
