Previous years would have seen the team in SA's position pushing past the first innings total and probably aiming to bat through in to the first session on day 4 to give themselves 80 plus overs to bowl QLD out.

I'm sure there will be examples of where the new points system is better than the old, but it's failed on this first occasion IMO. Essentially, the game's competitive nature has stopped since SA batted in to the 101st over and beyond up to the point where QLD declare, if they give a decent total for SA to chase, which is no guarantee.

at least there is a hope of a result now - previously so many shield games were just effectively single innings games.

so after declaring 80 behind we rolled them for 152 and are now 1/32, with another 195 to get for an outright win

surely aerie and mal this is a better result than a boring draw played out for first innings points?

SA pick up another home shield game - sort of the Vics have transferred their home game with SA to Glenelg. They don't have an alternative venue available due to the MCG being off limits and can't get Junction Oval either.

It's in Feb/March next year. All SA's games are already there. Pick up the extra game v Victoria and they also play 2 games in Alice Springs.

WILLIAM SOMERVILLE
Interesting pick up by New South Wales made his debut for them this season against Victoria in round one
Played cricket for Otago in NZ until Australia day 26/1/ 2009
Plays no more First Class cricket until this season , 5 years later

Somerville is 30 years old
His first class stats read
70 runs @14.00
7/382 @ 54.57

Against Victoria
7
0/104
10
0/14

In the current game against South Australia[9/290]
Batted 10 and made a first ball duck
0/32[9]
He wont forget the first scoring shot from his bowling in his debut at the Adelaide Oval
He pitched the ball at Tom Cooper and the ball sailed into the crowd for the maximum

Obviously Somerville has been performing well in grade cricket to get a call up ?
However, with his modest career to date, it might be New South Wales are lacking depth at the moment ?
He has bowled in 3 innings and taken 0/150 in the Sheffield Shield

He had to qualify as a local player first (5 years) don't think cricket was his main motivation for moving across the ditch. Must have been employment outside of cricket
