I think Patterson might make the First Test. Great first up performance against Sussex and a decent bat. Reckon the Poms would be wary of his progress.

Finally we have some batting depth. I agree with TDK's lineup. Carey, Harris, Wade would all be in the running for next man in; it would obviously be good for Carey to get some red ball match practice.

I also wouldn't mind seeing Bird in action. English conditions should suit him.

I recon the final xi is far from set.

Khawaja - will his hammy be fixed? Marnus would be looking good for a shot at #3 if it's not.
Assuming Khawaja plays and bats three, I recon Kurtis, Marnus, Carey and Wade would all be a chance to bat at 6.

As for the bowlers: James Patto, Lyon and HWood: these three will fill the final 2 spots behind Starc and Cummins, likely to be based on pitch conditions.

Nah, Marnus can carry the drinks thanks.

I hope we go with James Pattinson from the start rather than wait 3 tests for Hazelwood to prove he's not up to it. IMO Hazelwood and Cummins are too similar, Cummins can dry it up more than what Hazelwood can these days. Its a bonus that Cummins is also a wicket taker. Lyon will play every test.

Warner, Harris, Laub, Smith, Head, Carey to be the 1st test 6. Khawaja wont be fit. By the sounds of the report today there will only be 7 batsman selected (not including Carey, hes the 2nd keeper) so besides the 6 I have mentioned one more to be added, I would say that will be Patterson.

You wouldn't include Smith?

If Wade doesn't play in the first test we are not serious about the Ashes

First test side for me should be:

Warner
Harris
Head
Smith
Wade
Patterson
Paine (only because he is the only captain choice)
Cummins
Pattinson
Starc
Lyon

The only concern in that collapse was Paine. All the others to fall will not be playing in the First Test.

Agree with whufc... if Smith could captain then Carey would replace Paine in our starting line up.

Do you think they'd play Wade and Carey? I don't.

Not a suggested batting order, just highlighting all of the lefties.

Yes, I would include Smith.

Carey would replace Paine if he wasnt picked.
Wades selection is a separate issue. If hes in the top six bats then he should get a berth regardless od whether Carey or Paine keeps.
Would they select Carey AND Wade as specialist bats? Absolutely not

Burns and Harris vying for that opening spot. Burns as a RH has an advantage but... 3 dropped slips catches in the last two innings will definitely not help his cause.
