Pat Cummins’ manager reveals how cricket administrators are killing Test cricket

Pat Cummins’ long-time player agent says cricket administrators are “killing” the game and that he cannot envisage players focusing on Test cricket into the future.

As the prospect of a second Indian Premier League window beckons, international cricket is appearing increasingly marginalised, leading former Sheffield Shield player, Cricket NSW director and veteran player manager Neil Maxwell to bemoan the future of the sport.

“There’s just so much cricket,” Maxwell told RSN on Tuesday, pointing the finger at boards including Cricket Australia.

“I think the full member countries are definitely to blame because there’s no structure and no context to the game of cricket.

“The game has lost all sight of what’s important. Everyone’s just wanting to play cricket for the sake of playing it. Some of the most meaningless games of cricket around the world will be taking place.

“The ICC is a meaningless body, it’s just an event organiser that organises World Cups now…it’s the full member boards basically.”

Maxwell, whose company manages Australian captain Cummins along with fellow quick Josh Hazlewood and has also been Mike Hussey’s long-time agent, said the final opportunities on offer on the short-form white-ball circuit provided little incentive for the next generation of prospective Test cricketers to focus on their red ball skills.

“As sad as it sounds, there’s no way in the world a player would be focused on Test cricket. We’ve got the most amazing Test team at the moment, and they’re winning everything before them, which is brilliant to see. Where does the No. 14 player get a game? It ain’t happening, and it’s not going to happen,” Maxwell said.

“There’ll be a changing of the guard in the next two to three years, there’s no doubt about that, but we’re going to miss two or three generations of cricketers who are vying for 11 spots when they’re being offered 500 spots around the world in other formats of the game. So we’ve got to be honest with ourselves. These players have to make a living, otherwise they’re going to be pottering around in Sheffield Shield cricket trying to get one spot in the next five to 10 years. So it just doesn’t add up, does it?”

Maxwell also bemoaned a lack of prize money being directed towards players at ICC events, as well as the proliferation of World Cups. Under the current ICC global broadcasts rights deal, there is a senior men’s ICC title up for grabs every year

“FICA (the global player union body) is fighting to try and get an elevation of two per cent to three per cent for prize money in World Cups. The Matildas with due respect who finished fourth in the World Cup make more money than the Australian players do for winning the World Cup.

“We’re diluting the product by having a World Cup every year. So the players lose a World Cup and they’ve got another one in six months. I’m sorry to sound cynical because I really don’t want to be, because I do love the game of cricket, but when you look at these points, facts basically, it becomes stupid. The game is ridiculous.

“Unfortunately we’re killing a game that’s such a big part of our history.”

Maybe but Pakistan were top of the WTC table (now second after losing to Australia) and you'd think no team would want to lose points for slow over rates.

Ended up on $4.4M

Crazy rich asians. ;;)

If CA had any balls, they would dock contracted plays half of their IPL payments from their CA contract for the privilege of releasing them to play in India; why not outsource player payments to the filthy rich Indians.

Jason Holder has announced he is stepping away from tests to concentrate on T20’s.
Windies are bringing 7 uncapped players amongst their 15 man squad coming to Australia

Unless Chanderpaul hits some runs the Windies will be lucky to score over 100 in their innings.

Windies test cricket is obviously in free fall, has been for many, many years, go to admit it’s very sad to see.

There is little incentive for anyone from that region to aspire to Test cricket, rather the aim is to be good enough to earn big $$$ in T20.

As shit as they have been, I did a quick check on who they’ve beaten in the past 5 years or so (Tests), and not surprisingly, mainly Bangladesh and Afghanistan, an odd win against Pakistan and Zimbabwe, but notably, also some wins against England.

They are a shell of the great teams from the 60s, 70s and virtually unbeatable 80s, and no-one wants to watch them. #-O

Why?

The fact that no one has answered this speaks volumes. No offence to TDK who I know well but the state of test cricket is, quite frankly, fxxxed.

I just don't remember seeing your post/might of read it and forgot to reply later lol.

I just think no team would want to lose points to deny themselves a chance of playing in a WTC final and surely the players would want to avoid getting fined?

Look at Australia, missed out on playing in the initial WTC Final because of a loss of points due to slow over rates against India and then went on to win the next final in the previous cycle.

While I think it's shit they charged him he did breach their regulations.
https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/usma ... st-1413824
"Usman Khawaja has been charged for breaching Clause F of the Clothing and Equipment Regulations," an ICC spokesperson told ESPNcricinfo. "Usman displayed a personal message (arm band) during the first Test Match against Pakistan without seeking the prior approval of Cricket Australia and the ICC to display it, as required in the regulations for personal messages. This is a breach under the category of an 'other breach' and the sanction for a first offence is a reprimand."

The ICC's clothing and equipment regulations state: "Players and team officials shall not be permitted to wear, display or otherwise convey personal messages on their clothing, equipment or otherwise, irrespective of whether such messages are affixed to clothing, equipment or otherwise and whether such messages are displayed or conveyed through the use of the specific clothing or other items (eg. an arm band) or by the use of words, symbol, graphic message, images or otherwise ('personal messages'), unless approved in advance by both the player or team official's board and the ICC Cricket Operations Department. Approval shall not be granted for messages which relate to political, religious or racial activities or causes."
