Reality check for Hughes. I think Matthew Elliott got a duck in his first Test innings. He's the last opener i remember that happening to.

Tassie, Law did debut in Perth. His one and only Test. Made 54 not out.

Yeah I thought so but wasn't prepared to put my left one on it... I can remember him getting 54 red inks too.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

IMO were already were seeing the same pattern emerging as we saw here in Australia, Seth Efrica bowling good lines and areas waiting for our blokes to play poor shots due to being tied down.

We need to get some graft and discipline back in our game - players prepared to bat ugly and do the hard yards.

Same test as Ponting made his debut. 96 and out to a dubious decision.

As for the last Hughes to debut for Australia - he took 1 for 130 odd in his first match.
That's pretty much a duck in bowlers terms. So hopefully this Hughes will get the chance to establish himself like big Merv.

If ever we needed the captain to stand up and bat with all the baggy green pride, passion and gusto it's now. Ponting has the chance here to bat Australia into a strong position against the best attack currently going around in the world on their home soil.

The decision was worse than dubious is was just plain wrong. There is no way known it was out but that's the way it goes.

As for Phil Hughes, he'll be fine. He has so much talent and getting this duck might actually be good for him. Will have a point to prove now and will not ever underestimate how tough Test cricket is.

They just replayed McKenzies catch to dismiss Katich. I missed it the first time but what a belter. That was a brilliant catch.

The other great thing Hughes did in that test was that he took the catch that gave Hookesy his only test wicket in his last test.

Next test it was Hookes out S Waugh in...

I think the selectors way have got that one right....

That test also saw the start of the Marsh Boon opening partnership when they walked out together late on day five to start Australia's 2nd innings... Flip couldn't open because he was crook.

Graeme Smith drops a dolly at first slip. One thing you don't do is drop Ponting. He inevitably makes opposition pay.

One good reason why I like watching Test matches in South Africa
The cameramen love showing the beautiful looking women in the crowd

Steyn should have been 7.1 overs 3/13
Ends up 8 overs 2/23 at lunch
Graham Smith drops a sitter at slip, wonder if his injured arm has healed yet

Really was regulation, in fact probably easier than regulation. Even more amazing was who dropped it, he is a super slipper.

On a side note, pretty piss poor crowd given the massive build up to this series, they was word that the tickets sold to this game had been amazing but obviously not.

Ponting out to a cracker from Ntini for 83

Clarke looking really really good.

Australia 4/153.
