I thought of Blewitt just after i wrote that lol, G Chappell I didn't list as he played most of his games for Qld, Gillespie I just plain forgot about. As with all lists there will be people left out who should be included, and those I mentioned were just examples and not a definitive list.

You're probably right, but I'll plead ignorance as his SA career was before I can remember.

Was McCurdy a local product ?
I thought he came over from Victoria.

Regardless, state cricket in South Australia is well below standard.

Perhaps if theres a threat that the ACT will join the Sheffield Shield at SA's expense, the SACA might actually do something to improve cricket in this state. South Australian cricket has been a joke for the last 15 years. The population argument doesnt cut it because firstly Tasmania is a small state and is much more competitive and also I can recall whilst growing up (up to 15 years ago) SA consistently produced quality local players such as I Chappell, Darling, Hookes, Bishop, Zesers, Sleep, Phillips, Lehmann, Nobes and May (not to mention the quality interstate recruits such as Mallett, Hilditch, Hogg, Siddons, McIntyre and Brayshaw). I've always been proud of the state of SA football, we've always punched above our weight in state games and with the amount of champions we've produced on the national stage. As an SA cricket follower however I've had a gutsful of the excuses going hand in hand with the incompetent garbage served up year after year since the mid 90's.

Don't rate G Chappell, McCurdy, Gillespie, R Harris or Blewett, GWW? ;) :D

Don't rate Michael haysman? ;)
He was going to be the next big thing in State cricket before his defection to Seth Efrica.

I tend to remember McCurdy as a Vic too, but wasnt certain. Haysman was a big disappointment.

Was just trying to add to your argument GWW.

From memory McCurdy and Hogg swapped states one year, we got Hogg and lost McCurdy, or is that wrong?

Yeah, forgot about Haysman. Remember enjoying watching him as a kid. Does anyone remember the story behind him going to South Africa, because surely he would have got into the Test side during the 80's?

SA has never been great at producing local talent. Sure there have been the exceptions like the Chappells, Lehmann, Hookes, Gillespie, etc, but generally without the injection of interstate or overseas talent, SA's record in terms of Sheffield Shields would read a very poor tale.

Here are details of SA's most recent Sheffield Shield winning seasons:

1926-27 Clarrie Grimmett (Victoria) most wickets (30)

1935-36 Don Bradman (NSW) -captain, most runs (739), Jack Badock (Tas) - 622 runs

1938-39 Don Bradman (NSW) -captain, most runs (801), Jack Badock (Tas) - 489 runs
Clarrie Grimmett (Vic) - most wickets (27)

1952-53 Les Favell (NSW) - most runs (427), Graeme Hole (NSW) - best average 339 @ 84.75

1963-64 Les Favell (NSW) - captain, 680 runs. Garfield Sobers (WI) 973 runs, 47 wickets.

1968-69 Les Favell (NSW) - captain, Ashley Mallett (WA) - most wickets (29), Terry Jenner (WA) 24 wickets.

1970-71 Barry Richards (South Africa) - most runs (1101), Terry Jenner (WA) - most wickets (30)

1975-76 Gary Cosier (Vic) - 526 runs & 15 wickets, Ashley Mallett (WA) - most wickets (38)
Wicketkeeper: Denis Yagmich (WA)

1981-82 Jeff Crowe (NZ) 657 runs, John Inverarity (WA) - 344 runs & 30 wickets
Wicketkeeper: Kevin Wright (WA)

1995-96 Jamie Siddons (Vic) - captain, 645 runs. James Brayshaw (WA) - 822 runs
Peter McIntyre (Victoria) - 37 wickets.

Follow on ?
Why not

It's not like their bowlers did much work...

Ive always said , making sides follow on is frought with danger
To prove my point NostraMALdamus predicts SA will make more runs in the 2nd innings

SA 4/209
BLIZZARD 67*
MANOU 46*
Were 4/122
Now lead by 13 runs, and have a sniff for victory
The TA bowlers now bowled almost 100 overs over the 2 innings
In this instance the follow on was the right decision, but by following on you do give the opposition a better chance of winning as well
This Manou bloke is batting well !!!
A lead of 150 + would make things very interesting

ROD MCCURDY
Played district cricket at Woodville
Is from Victoria, and mates with Rodney Hogg, and they both played at Woodville
Played for Australia in limited overs games, I recall him getting wickets in a game vrs the mighty WI

Hawker. Normally I don't start arguing with you until the football season (not on the SANFL board though LOL) but I thought Grimmett was a Kiwi who wasn't really given a go by the Vics hence the move to Adelaide?
