Is Boland a better bowler than Hazelwood?
Two great bowlers, but who would you choose between them?

In England I would almost choose Boland and Hazelwood over Starc.

Yes, inclined to agree with that.
But back to my question?

Without double checking I believe Starc record in England only average

Just looked averages over 30 in England

Hazelwood averages 23

And with the way the Poms are thrashing the ball at every opportunity, I think Starc may well be very risky.

Yep

No recipe like constant stump to stump bowling with subtle movement off the pitch. Test their patience for sure. Starc bowls too many four balls on their postage stamp, they will dine out on him like they’ve done previously

That was pretty much the reason why Pattinson and Siddle played instead of Starc in the first 3 test matches and then the 5th match of the 2019 Ashes so Boland playing instead of Starc is likely next Ashes.

WI 4/38 at stumps day 3, need 459 to win.
Turned out to be the ideal declaration with that last hour an a half being the hardest time bat under lights against the pink ball, Australia were never going to make the Windies follow on bowling them out when they did earlier in the day.

The vision on Fox regarding his length - bowling it regularly on an A4 piece of paper is quite unbelievable and worth showing kids who aspire to be medium fast/fast bowlers.

You don't have to be the fastest bowler but accuracy kills.

Good question
Hazelwood for me, has been a great 'consistent' bowler for a long time
Boland in the short term has performed as well as any fast bowler Ive ever seen- his is Lillie/Mcgrath/Lightning Mcqueen standard

The thing is u select Hazelwood b4 Boland as you get a bowler that bowls well just about anywhere
The test for Boland would be bowling in Asia and and overseas in general.

My pecking order of fast bowlers
Cummins[ the best of them all as bowls a lot at first change ]
Hazelwood
STARc [ coz he is left handed and varies the attack]
Boland
Lightning Lance the wild thing Morris [ the future]
Neser [ on certain decks] who is very under rated

Still maintain that Australia needs to blood Lightning Lance , the others whilst aging well, mite all be retiring close to each other

Very good post Mal.

Hazelwood and Boland are too similar to play together

If too similar is bowling over after over on a perfect line and length with natural subtle movements off the pitch than there is no such thing as ‘to similar’

Plus Hazelwood is almost ten centremetres taller than Boland and bowls from a great height……completely different release points. Subtle different date just as valuable.

In England I reckon it would work well. At the moment the English batsmen are looking to play shots and certainly get on with it. Some good line and length bowling will bring that undone.

Starc could be very expensive in that situation.

Yeah agree I’m basing my post on cricket in England where natural movement off the pitch gives bowlers variety.

In Australia where the pitches play truer having a bowler that provides that bit of extra pace definitely has a role.

Boland is our best bowler IMO.
