Help!

I'm studying up on a local cricketer, named Peter Magarey, and know that he played in a game against England for SA Country at Renmark in 1978.

I'd like to confirm that he actually took two wickets in that match - those of Mike Brearley and Graham Gooch.

Two handy scalps, the captain at the time and a future captain as well as England's all time runscorer.

What i'm hoping is that someone somewhere might have in their cricket library a book which features this game's scorecard.

I've tried Cricinfo and Wisden on the net with no luck.

cheers in advance.

have you tried the SACA yet DW? I looked on cricinfo and could only find out that the match was drawn and they are unlikely to have any records as it was not a first class match.

Ring up the SACA
Ask for Bernard Whimpress
He is a historian of cricket and has written several books
Otherwise ECKY + SPELL CHECK may assist if you Private Message them

PS: I had a tour book with the whole scorecard in it, but leant it to someone else who played in that game, and they never returned it! Last time that happens I promise you.

Sadly, my copy of Ashes '79 by David Frith only lists England 4-199 dec (Radley 64, Gooch 47) v SA Country XI 6-137 for Nov 1. First match in the region by the Poms since 1950 tour. Poms made the runs in 160 minutes and country replied in same amount of time. Said team had to fly out via the lights of flares as finished in darkness!!!!! No more detail than that.

A pitch in both camps, by Alan Lee, gives nothing at all.
Lams to the Slaughter, by Graham Yallop, obviously gives nothing.

Will hunt around a few other books and some other stuff I've got.

There was a book written by Bob Taylor and David Gower in diary form that may have the scores.

I also remember Boycott put out a book on that particular tour also... see what gives

If Bernard can't help, and he generally can, other guys who are v v good in this area are:
Ric Finlay (stats for ABC cricket) email is on the net - ricf@netspace.net.au
Ross Dundas (stats for NSWCA and still the ACB i believe) - get him through Cricket Australia

Would this guy be a relative of the Magarey who played league footy for Sturt in the late 70's?

Robert Magarey, not sure myself, but he played 27 matches and kicked 18 goals between 1980 and 1982.

Paul Magarey also played for Sturt in 2001 - 8 matches and 4 goals.

One name I noted in that SA country side was GC Madden... still running around in the lower grades at Payneham, and an assistant coach at the Dukes!

Thanks Spelly! I see I was right about Peter's scalps.

Peter Magarey is the uncle of Paul (also a handy cricketer), I think Robert is Peter's brother.
Peter, who played district for University, is also still playing for Loxton.

As for Grub Madden, great bloke. I played in Loxton's last premeirship with him in 1999/2000.
He opened the batting, scored very little but was a barnacle, a ball hit his knee late in the innings, so he couldn't field the next day. Rocked up to the match on crutches. Miraculously threw them away and ran out to centre wicket when we won!

Youngster, suggesting that he's still running is a bit of a joke...he's got keeper's knees ;)

He did last time I saw him.

There's a few former Riverlanders involved at Payneham isn't there?

Martin Baker, Grant Wyman (?), Jason Gaerth, Travis and Brendan Schiller, Trav Wilton played there too.

Any of those names ring a bell?

Dogwatcher,

Your right about the riverlanders at Payneham. Brenny Schiller is opening up in the A's at the moment (got about 40 on the weekend) and Trav Schiller opened up in the B's (and got none). Girder is quality, he would be one of the best cricketers in ATCA, my opinion only. Not sure what Trav Wilton though. Ben Staniford also played at payneham last year. Theres a few old riverland boys down in the ATCA at the moment.

AS for Peter Magarey pretty remarkable bloke really, still kicking on and playing with the same enthusiasm i am sure.

Girder is quality. You know it's amazing Loxton won that flag that year - Barmera-Cobdogla had a remarkable line-up that would've won it any other year.

J. Gaerth
P. Page
K. Taylor
D. Reynolds
G. Scheuffele
D. Hastwell
C. Headley

A fairly handy bowling line-up!

Chasing 106 they should've won.

Geez

A few blokes that can play in that B-Cobby team

I see Big Dan is captain of Berri these days. That boy can turn it on when he wants to
Who did loxton have. was that when Gutsche and Jacko were piling on the runs week in week out...

i see renmark have dropped out again this year. a bit of a pity. Most of the ex renmark guys are playing down here. The fellas at payneham, a couple at goodwood and fitz and ash at the bays.
