Gilly named one-day greatest
By Greg Buckle
November 14, 2007 ADAM Gilchrist has been named Australia's greatest one-day international cricketer of all-time.

Gilchrist, on his 36th birthday, was handed the honour by his peers, with all 163 players to have represented Australia in ODIs invited to vote on the best.

In total, 110 players voted and Gilchrist won comfortably with 38 per cent of the poll from his captain Ricky Ponting (19 per cent) and former skipper Steve Waugh(14 per cent).

Three-time World Cup winner Gilchrist received the honour at an Australian Cricketers' Association (ACA) function at Bellerive Oval in Hobart on Wednesday, where the second Test against Sri Lanka starts on Friday.

Gilchrist saved his best until last in this year's Caribbean World Cup campaign with a spectactular 149 off 104 balls against Sri Lanka in the final in Barbados.

The ACA held a special tribute dinner in Sydney in February to announce Australia's greatest ODI team, as voted by former and current Australia ODI players.

S. Waugh
M. Bevan

I was a little out.

The team was: Adam Gilchrist, Mark Waugh, Ricky Ponting, Dean Jones, Steve Waugh (capt), Michael Bevan, Andrew Symonds, Shane Warne, Brett Lee, Dennis Lillee, Glenn McGrath, Greg Chappell (12th man).

Not bad Dog, very close, for me I would have had G.S. Chappell in the 11 before Symonds, purely on the fact that Chapps is from S.A. :D

Not too much to argue with in that side.

I would stick Ian's brother, Greg, in the 11 at the expense of Bevan.

That correct, the best ODI side was named in February.

This is a seperate vote by all ODI players as who they think is the greatest ODI player in the history of Australian ODI's, which was Glichrist by quite alot. This was annouced today.

Good to see Deano in the side. Had a big mouth which got him into trouble (and still does), but sh*t, he was so good to watch at the crease. I still remember him and AB batting at Adelaide over. You could tell they were trying to out-hit each other as soon as they got on strike. Classic stuff.

**** Micheal Bevan. Killed the run rate every time and got legend status for finishing one match against the West Indies. How can he get in ahead of Pugsley who scored 127 against the same nation at their peak. A travesty.
