Queensland Bulls captain Jimmy Maher has announced his retirement and will play his final match against South Australia in Adelaide from Friday.

An emotional Maher made his decision to call it quits before the end of the season after seeing Adam Gilchrist and Bulls team-mate Michael Kasprowicz do the same thing recently.

"It (retirement) has been on my mind and I must admit and I tossed and turned a fair bit before I settled on this. Coming here today to make this announcement is probably the toughest thing I've had to do," he said as he choked back tears.

Maher has played 154 first-class matches for the Bulls, second only to former captain Stuart Law (158).

Maher also represented Australia in 26 one-day internationals.

He needs just 99 more runs to become the second player behind Martin Love to score 10,000 first-class runs for Queensland.

I'd thought that he had somehow retired last year.

If I see another sportsman tearing up because he's giving it away I'm going to puke. Take some fargen concrete pills ya giant wussbags.

Redbacks might get to win a game next season after all as Kasper has gone as well.

regards,

REB

I don't mind if they get emotional, as long as they don't go and join the ICL, ala Kaspa, Dizzy, and Elliott.

Did I hear right that Brad Hogg has retired too?

We've got some pretty good retirees in the past 12 months

In batting order:
Langer
Elliot
Martyn
Lehmann
Maher
Gilchrist
Warne
Hogg?
Gillespie
Kaspa
McGrath

Forgotten anyone?

Doubt very much that Hogg has retired. Where did you hear that?

I came in on the end of the ABC news at three.
I was surprised too, but they were giving a wrap of his career and then said he will play out the current one day series.
