Is manou any chance of taking over if Brad hadden cant play in the 3rd test. They Have mention Ronchi but Manou had a solid year and is better with the gloves.

Manou had a good year but i'd be very surprised if he was considered for Australian selection. Too old (better off giving a game to someone who'll still be around in 4 or 5 years), and i think needed to excel in more than one year to have any chance.

too old????????

29 years and 44 days too old??? i think not mate how old was gilchrist when he debuted? and how old was he when he retired? answer me those 2 questions please!

graham manou is the perfect replacement, last years pura cup keeper of the year is the testament to that, man in form must be picked on this occasion especially if its a one off!

I qualified "too old" by saying they're better off giving the job to a young guy who'll be around in 4 or 5 years, when Manou will probably have retired. Manou has only had one good year in 5, and as such doesn't deserve a Test spot, comparing him to a freak like Gilchrist is not really apt, because he was always seen as the long term replacement for Healy, and had performed at a high standard for 4 or 5 years before gaining Australian selection. So theres a bit of a difference there.

Depending on what they are after, I don't think that Gilly was a freak behind the stumps, his brilliance with the bat compensated for his sometimes sloppy keeping. I don't think that anyone has really excelled as a replacement for Haddin, I don't think the selectors thought that far ahead.

So why was Hartley plucked from 2nd XI cricket and sent on an Australia A tour to Pakistan in 2005? Why has Ronchi been picked in Australia A games for teh last two years? Why was Tim PAine sent abck to teh COE to work on his 'keeping last year and is now #1 Keeper at Tassie. Selectors have long ear-marked Ronchi and HArtley as the long term 'keepers for Australia post Haddin. If Hartley hadn't had a relatively poor season with the bat this year he would probably be off to the Windies.

Manou was only 'keeper of the year becasue he has no pressure for his spot where as Ronchi, Haddin, Croswhaite, Paine Clingleffer and Smith didn't have full seasons behind the stumps like Manou did in Shield cricket. You play more games you get more votes.

Ronchi's one-day batting record has been outstanding at times, he is probably the closest match to Gilly out of any that are going around, Haddin can bat, but does he have the capabilites to open an innings and start smashing the bowling from the begining, I think Ronchi does. Maybe they might need to look at a one day keeper aswell as a test keeper, we have now lost a batting position with Gilly gone.

As for Manou winning the "keeper of the year", it was probably because SA spent twice as much time in the field as any other side, they're going to have to give away the SACA passes this year if they want spectators.

He was an all round freak cricketer (ie especially his batting, to average 50 or so in such an attacking manner, and be a competent gloveman), thats what i meant.

I'm not defending Manou here - but that's muddled thinking Tassie.
If those blokes were good enough to make the Aussie side, then they should be able to withstand the pressure of someone else trying to take their position in their state team.

Well ronchi and Haddin didn't get full seasons due to one A Gilchrist and in HAddin's case playing in teh one day squad as a batsman.

My point is some people in SA rave about Manou well their are some 2nd XI 'keepers who are arguably better than him (Smith NSW, Clingleffer Tas, and the young kid whe started off in vis side and then fell out of favour to a rejuvinated Croswhaite).

I'd have liked to see SA make a play for Clingleffer as he is a better gloveman and arguably a better bat than Manou now that he is seemingly out of favour in Tasmania.

They'll just ask Emery to come out of retirement or find someone who has played for NSW and get them to wack the gloves on.

Disagree brod- im tipping you havent seen much of clingleffer- he is a fantastic gloveman and a very solid dogged batsman- i was surprised Sa didnt make a play at him too.
