Increasing business commitments have forced Trevor Hohns to resign as chairman of the National Selection Panel, Cricket Australia has announced.

Cricket Australia is currently working on a process to appoint a replacement for Hohns, who has been on the NSP since 1993 and its chairman since 1996.

Hohns said he was privileged to have held the position as chairman for such a long period and hoped he had left a positive legacy.

"Despite its obvious challenges, I have certainly enjoyed the role and can only hope that my contribution has in some small way assisted Australian cricket," Hohns said.

"My business interests are now at the stage that they are going to require more of my attention and for this reason alone I have made the decision to move on."

"The demands of the role of Chairman now make it almost a full-time position and it was certainly a difficult decision to make."

"I would like to thank Cricket Australia, the Cricket Australia Board, the players, the media, current and previous selectors and the countless number of others who have helped me in my time on the panel."

"I certainly appreciate everyone’s support and wish the Australian cricket team nothing but the very best for the future."

Cricket Australia chairman Creagh O'Connor paid tribute to the outgoing Hohns.

"Trevor has fulfilled one of Australian cricket’s most important roles in what has been one of the most successful eras in our history," O'Connor said.

"The role of chairman draws a lot of public and media scrutiny and seldom receives the recognition it deserves."

"In Trevor’s case, he has made an outstanding contribution to the role and has played a pivotal part in helping Australia remain the number one Test and one-day international team in world cricket over a sustained period."

"For this, we sincerely thank him and wish him all the best for his future endeavours."
