STEVE WAUGH OVERATED ? CHOKER ?

I have the upmost respect for Steve Waugh as a cricketer
BUT
He did all his great work in the first innings in test matches.

The perception that he was always a reliable courageous batsman
is in fact a myth.

Statistically he is a choker and a failure when the pressure
was on batting last chasing small totals.

His final test v India was a rare good second innings when he
saved us from defeat, however in general he choked.

Allan Border gets my vote when the chips were down.

mate, the first dig is what its all about...mostly he wasnt required in the 2nd dig...but when he was...he showed true grit and won the day. Manchester 97 rings a bell....mate, id rather have S. ******* WAUGH in my side batting in the 2nd dig than anyone else...

the man is a champion!!!!!!!!!

Mal **** off back to the Power from Port site where or the morons live and while you are at it give yourself an uppercut.

As Jimmy says the first dig is where it counts, mind you I would have backed Australia to get the runs at Sydney in 1994 if Waugh had been playing but his hamstring **** up on us so he didn't play

Manchester 1997
Lords 1989 when we were 4-60 chasing 120
Barbados 1995 when he and Healy put on runs to give us a total to bowl at to win the 1st test Manchester 1993 same scenario when Healy got his 100

This is off teh top of my head wait until I do a bit of research on cricinfo.....

the term Steve Waugh - Choker is an oxymoron where as you are just a moron

We could do with a choker like SR in the middle order at the mo. Australia currently has three batsmen, Hayden, Hussey and Ponting and in the current test match two of these are out. Hey, don't thank me..I'm always available to inform people who have absolutely no idea about Cricket about the finer points of the game, it's the only way you'll learn. Here endeth the lesson Mr Troll.

You could be right there REB. Out of curiosity, who would you select to replace the others - Martyn, Clarke, Gilchrist? Obviously Langer coming back in would knock one of them out.

Ah, see that's the problem Bill. My eleven would look something like this

REB's Ashes XI version XII

JAQUES: He's an opener. Pick him and leave him in the side.
HAYDEN: Worked hard and deserves to retain his side.
PONTING: Needs to improve his captaincy but the best batsman in world cricket right now.
HUSSEY: Up the order for Brazen but not opening the innings for mine.
SYMONDS: All the talent in the world. Stand by him! He'll succeed on the Australian wickets against the Poms.
COSGROVE: Must be picked in my view. Some of the encumbents are a joke.
GILCHRIST: Only if he hasn't got one eye on retirement, otherwise HADDIN or PAINE (Tas)
LEE: Has improved and will shake up the Englishmen in home conditions.
WARNE: Or MAGILL if Warne unfit. You have to pick the best bowler of all time for such an important series.
TAIT: Sheer pace on the bouncy tracks of Oz is the recepie for Devilled Englishman. I'm not bagging him anymore!!
MCGRATH: The steady influence of McGrath will be an ideal learning example for the often wayward Tait.

FRINGE:

PAINE: Potential
BIRT: Explosive
D.HUSSEY: Talented
HADDIN: Experienced
GILLESPIE: Hungry
CULLEN: Consistent
CLARK: Persistent
BRACKEN: Variety

OUT

CLARKE: Brainless
Martyn: Selfish
LANGER: Gunshy
HODGE: Nicker
KATICH: Limited
KASPROWICZ: Benign

REB

REB - I Cant beleive that I will say this but - You are spot on with that side. I also agree with your Symonds comment he is sheer talent - the selectors have to leave him in the side ( Flintoff was left for 20 test matches before he started to turn it on ).

I think you have got it right REB. Although team for mine would be for the Ashes:

LANGER: Still good enough to warrant a place. Definately last Ashes and maybe last test series.
HAYDEN: Best opener in the world. Will be around for a while yet.
PONTING: See REB post.
HUSSEY: Can bat anywhere, but number 4 most logical. If younger would be next captain
COSGROVE: Needs to be picked now, regardless of weight problems.
SYMONDS: Selectors need to persist with him, although age could become a barrier. Will need to perform or gone.
GILCHRIST: Best ever keeper/batsman, will play until decides to retire.
LEE: Is the main strike bowler, batting prowess added bonus - i think he should come in before Warne.
WARNE: See REB post. MacGill to fill his spot once injured/retired. Cullen then to be 2nd choice.
GILLESPIE: It will be either him or McGrath here. Dizzy will play if McGrath does not. I can't see selectors picking McGrath should he have not played any cricket in the lead up to the Ashes. If Gillespie mucks up, he will be straight out for McGrath.
TAIT: If he plays, I think he will be the pace bowler who will take the most wickets.

Rest of squad:
McGILL
JAQUES
CULLEN
M. CLARKE
S. CLARK
BRACKEN
HADDIN

Out:
KASPROWICZ: Excellent career but time to move on.
MARTYN: As above. Didn't do enough in SA to warrant retaining.
HODGE: Unlucky.
KATICH: Could come back in with good ODI performances, but I wouldn't like to see it.

BLINK AND RIK E BOY

Please read my introduction.

I loved watching Steve Waugh he was a
FIRST innings superstar, he won many test
matches with his efforts early in the game.

But do your stats on his efforts on chasing low
totals batting last in a TEST match.

I am not talking about one day cricket either.
I am not talking first innings efforts.

When some one out there with statistical
evidence porovides the facts you will all
be shocked.

PS I reacted like all of you initally but
once again check the stats evidence.

Maybe Mal but when you are new to a site and start a thread called Waugh choker and overrated it looks like a flat out troll rather than a realistic question. If you really respect SR then you wouldn't have a thread entitled this, question marks or no question marks.

The point about the first innings said it all, that is the key innings in any test match. Succeed there and the need for second innings heroics are usually not required in the first place. The Australians in Waugh's time were usually in a strong position, just how much of an influence does a number six in a side doing this have to have before you rate and respect Steve Waugh to the extent that you initially claimed. I would hate to see what you would say about a cricketer you didn't respect.

We may have judged you harshly mal but your early foray into this forum has been underwhelming to say the least. FWIW, Border was the best fighter Australia have had in my time of watching the national team.
