I only have limited crowd data for Test matches - a complete set for Adelaide from 1998/99, but I have got all of the NZ Test matches. This is how todays crowd shapes up:

2004/05: 18,246
2008/09: 15,829
1973/74: 9,682
1987/88: 8,980

The 17,100 is the lowest opening day crowd at Adelaide since 15,491 people were at the 1999/00 Test vs India.

Also, the maximum temperature of 20.3 degrees was the coldest opening day since the 1995/96 Test vs Sri Lanka.

Did they have a measuring instrument for the pollen count in 1974? ;)

17,100 was a graphic shown on the TV yesterday. I heard it was something like 18,000 today, but can't find an actual figure anywhere yet.

Ok, I've amended that tally. The maximum temperature today was 21.0 degrees, giving an average of 20.65 over the first two days. This is the coldest since the 1999 Test vs India (average of 20.5)

The total crowd of 56,777 is not a record vs N.Z, however the average crowd of 14,194.3 is. Beating the record of 12,137.8 in the 2004/05 Test. The 14,194.3 average is the lowest for an Adelaide Oval Test since 2005/06.

The average maximum temperature during the Test was 22 degrees. This is the 2nd coldest Test match ever played at Adelaide:

1986/87: 12-16 Dec 1986, avg. 21.3
2008/09: 28-1 Dec 2008, avg. 22.0
1975/76: 23-28 Jan 1976, avg. 22.4
1970/71: 29-3 Feb 1971, avg. 23.4
1991/92: 25-29 Jan 1992, avg. 23.6

I'm not sure how much impact having the first three days on weekdays are for the Perth crowds, but if it happened in Adelaide, I doubt it would have made a difference when you consider the average crowd for the last 11 Test matches here:

1st: 19,254
2nd: 19,515
3rd: 19,095
4th: 12,818
5th: 8,236

The 1st day in this time has always been on a Thursday or Friday, and is only fractionally lower than day 2.

On face value, the Adelaide crowds do not stand up to the Melbourne crowds (obvious reasons, of course). But consider this:

The Melbourne population is 3.7 times greater than the Adelaide population. So, lets divide the 63,263 by that:

Figure: 17,098

Then, the fact that the Melbourne Test match always starts on a public holiday, while the Adelaide Tests have not started on a public holiday, nor a weekend since 1997.

Therefore, the crowd of 15,829 for the Adelaide 1st day is quite comparable.

If the Adelaide crowds from the Test this season were multiplied by 3.7 they would be:

Day 1: 58,550
Day 2: 67,010
Day 3: 59,652
Day 4: 24,801
Total: 210,013
