'safe' cricket

Postby bayman » Tue Jan 27, 2009 12:09 pm

i was just down the bay oval paying our footy memberships & out on the oval was a game of cricket being played, i wouldn't have a clue who or what grades were playing but given the tempreature surely this (& other) games should be postponed for health & welfare reasons of the players & umpires, lets face it they wouldn't be professionals having expert help with hydration etc behind the scenes, one day someone will collapse & possibly die

The match being played is a Country Carnival match.

In these weather conditions, matches would generally be played as normal. However, there will be more regular drink breaks than is normally scheduled.

Unfortunately a player did die last year in the Adelaide Turf competition. From memory the temperature that day was around the 36C mark. Adelaide Turf call games off (excluding A1 games) if the forecast temp is 40 or higher. No idea what game was being played today at Glenelg but i do agree that in this weather games should not proceed.

Gee you'd never play cricket in the NT if you'd think this is hot...

At least it is hot and dry, try playing cricket when it is hot and humid.

Plenty of fluids, sensible bowling rotations and avoid alcohol before and after games and you'll be right
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Exactly ive played in hotter admittedly with a lunch and tea break but extra drinks breaks and sensible captaincy its fine to play in this heat. The exception to the rule is if you are only social cricketers and physically cope with the heat. That’s why the heat policy comes into play with lower grade cricket and ATCA etc

Day 1 of the senior country carnival, I think that is South East Vs Mid North at Glenelg Oval today.

Precautions are being taken and we may see some modifications to game formats in the next couple of days to stay on top of player welfare.

Nothing will modify the after match drinking of the country boys let loose in the city, I can promise you that.

Which in itself is a concern, would be nice if they managed their hydration, but the chance of a country cricket team in the city staying off the beers is not good...

The chance of a country cricket team not drinking, eating good foods, not going to the Crazy Horse and getting a good night's sleep are verrrryyyy slim ;)

i wonder & god forbid you'd think the same if a player or official collapses today, as the old saying goes PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE

ps, i even believe at least one sanfl club has changed the training schedule to early mornings to avoid the heat

They might partake in some bird-watching whilst down near Glenelg, I'm led to believe that there is a variety of species of tits that frequent the beached area in the afternoons.

If god forbid it did happen I would certainly question the preparation of those involved.

Quite confident of established strategies to avoid heat stress injuries that are well documented and Are practised frequently in country cricket circles.

AS I said hot and dry isn't as bad as hot and humid.

the bowler may not think so as he wouldn't be able to get much if any swing, if the worse happened today would the rest of the 'series' continue ? the answer would be NO

Woops...The kids were running on the pitch last night...hopefully the bowlers don't hit a divot the footy may have inadvertently made

jab, don't let the council know, i took little bayman down there for a hit in the nets and the curator (council) said we weren't allowed in the nets or out in the middle or we'd get fined heavily, we went back later that day & played in the nets ;)
